OTTAWA (Reuters) - The son of one of the greatest defenders of Canadian unity, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, has stirred up a hornets' nest by speculating about backing Quebec separatism if the country moves too far right.
Trudeau's 40-year-old son, Justin, now a Liberal member of Parliament, said in an interview with the French-language service of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp on Sunday that he was enormously saddened by the direction of the country under Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
He said that at some point he might even back independence for his home province, French-speaking Quebec. Referendums in Quebec on independence in 1980 and 1995 both failed, the last one by a mere 1.2 percentage points.
"I always say, if at a certain point I thought that Canada was really the Canada of Stephen Harper - that we were going against abortion, and we were going against gay marriage and we were going backwards in 10,000 different ways - maybe I would think about wanting to make Quebec a country," he said.

Quebec is 90% Catholic.
Since folks here always claim Catholics are conservative, how does that compute?
It would seem that would be a hard sell and that folks would be begging to create a French Canada to ban the very things he wants to preserve.

The fraction of the Quebec population that observes Catholicism is miniscule. It is one of the most anti-religious places on the planet.
Canada would be better off ditching Quebec. Think of all they money they could save by not having to print everything in English and French anymore.
If abortion and gay marriage are the values of the “new” nation of Quebec, then it won’t be too long before the territory is returned to those First Nations people.
I do hope they separate. BC and the western provinces have long been screwed by the dirty little secret that actually is the foundation of canada...equalization payments. Meaning, canada’s provinces has a gun to it’s head and the equalization payments were a mafia tribute as to appease Quebec in staying since confederation. I was a kid in Sask when the QC referendum unfolded in 1995.
I pissed off a lot of my HS teachers when they were bragging “we are not Americans as we belong to the UK as part of Commonwealth.” My answer was “if we are, then why is French spoken as the national language?’

There was a series of articles about it when I was still in BC. It’s mandatory to have French as it is fed law but in western canada, no one really speaks it. The worst part if that French Tv channels and radio are required, and the reason why people watch it is because there show French movies where most of the women are nekkid’.
Kind of the same reason we watch the Spanish channels, although they aren't naked, but still, hot just the same.
