Rasmussen Poll National (Santorum 39%, Romney 27%)
Rasmussen ^ | 2/15/12 | staff

Posted on 02/15/2012 9:30:10 AM PST by TexasFreeper2009

Follow the bouncing ball. Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum has now bounced to a 12-point lead over Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters finds Santorum with 39% support to the former Massachusetts governor’s 27%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich follows from a distance with 15% of the vote, and Texas Congressman Ron Paul runs last with 10%. Three percent (3%) like some other candidate in the race, and six percent (6%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Just over a week ago, it was Romney leading the pack with 34% after his win in the Florida Primary, followed by Gingrich 27%, Santorum 18% and Paul 11%. But then last week Santorum swept GOP caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota and a non-binding primary in Missouri as Gingrich continues to stumble in the race to be the conservative alternative to Romney.

Perhaps more tellingly, Santorum now trounces Romney 55% to 34% in a one-on-one matchup among likely GOP primary voters. This is the first time any challenger has led Romney nationally in a head-to-head match-up. Santorum also leads Romney head-to-head in Michigan.

Nationally, Romney still wins 47% to 38% paired against Gingrich and 47% to 42% running against only Paul.

Although Romney is being pushed as the front runner, one thing I've noticed in all the debates and that no media will ever talk about, is how the other GOP candidates either are neck and neck or they win over him.

Which would tell anyone with a lick of common sense, NO ONE WANTS ROMNEY!!!!

I'm beginning to conclude that Mr. “Average Guy” IS what we need...for stability and reassurance in a country that has been battered by the current goons’ policies for 3 years.

WE need someone who “won't give up” and who just keeps on truckin”, as it were. That is probably Santorum.

Dear Gop Establishment,

Please buy a clue. The base does not support Mitt Romney.

Santorum is an excellent candidate with inconsequential baggage, sterling credentials, honesty about his beliefs, and the ability to campaign intensely when necessary.

He now leads this campaign by double digits and with Gingrich’s numbers, 54% of the base (more if Paul counted) does NOT want Romney.

This has repeated itself time and again.

Wake up call.

Sarah Palin’s got something no one has, she has “it”, even more than Reagan imo.

Nothing anyone can say to me , parroting the liberal media ,will make me believe that Sarah Palin could beat an average guy like Santorum, nor the rest of this field, including democrat Obama the marxist in chief.

That she quit is a huge mistake . She could have easily had it all.

Sarah Palin had less of chance than Santourm?..

...I neither said nor suggested any such thing...

Palin is a million times more famous than Santorum...

...never said nor suggested otherwise...

Palin is very pretty also!...

...Jennifer Lopez is pretty...should she run for POTUS based on that?... Your objective in making such a silly point is???

...FWIW, I think if the GOP is stupid enough to nominate Rick Santorum, a guy I actually admire immensely, Barack Obama wins in a landslide...my personal feelings for a candidate cannot be allowd to cloud my political judgment...

You're insane if you think looks , charisma and that “it” factor is not important in politics.Sarah Palin had it more than anyone. But that's not the only thing. She had the conservative message , and record as governor etc. that would allow her to easily win.

For you to say that I'm comparing a conservative governor of a State to a hollywood liberal actress who is not even a politician is ludicrous.

Well, then, maybe Santorum ought to invite Palin to be his VP.

Palin should have been in and committed before the McGinniss book was out and her daughters got temporary cold feet. Also I think the $ raising looked overwhelming.

But Santorum’s managed it on a shoestring. Trouble is he’d never fly nationally with some of his social positions and he’s a huge-government crony type anyway. The question is who benefits once Romney’s team roughs him up—Mitt or Newt? If it’s Newt it truly could be a contested convention.

She could have easily had it all...

...what she has now is more valuable than any political prize, no matter how big...she has both her family and integrity, neither of which would have emerged unscathed in a presidential run...for every Palin cheerleader such as yourself, there are ten hardcore lefty operatives imbedded in the national media that hate her with unmatched passion...
...did you like what happened to Bush?...multiply that by at least two and you get an idea of what would happen to such a slow moving target as Palin...

She could have been a force to be reckoned with. She blinked. Now WE have to move on. Or Romney wins by default.

I was and am terribly disappointed in her, but realize that she had to do what her conscience dictated...and that her family required.

But I just know that Sarah Palin could have won. She is that politician that has “it” more than anyone has ever had. Santorum doesn’t compare and he is leading so Palin would be so much more ahead now. That is certain to anyone with any kind of common sense that Palin could be Santorum.

Yeah what is she going to have when the U.S.A collapses and the socialists and thugs come for what little we all have left?

Remember all those early polls that had a “Generic Republican” beating Obama?

Maybe Santorum is generic. Kind of nondescript. Maybe a blank slate to most Americans.

I think there's a lot to this! Romney was always the "ABO" guy. Problem was, people just didn't like him but they supported him believing he was the only candidate with the money and campaign infrastructure to beat Obama --a guy they disliked more than Romney. Unfortunately for Romney, as it became clearer that the conservative base would stay home, the belief that only he could beat Obama began to fade. In Gingrich, you had the opposite problem. Conservative Republicans love him but he alienates everyone else. And even among many who love Gingrich is the belief that he can't defeat Obama. Too high of negatives and too much personal baggage. Santorum is now emerging as that generic, vanilla candidate that most Republican voters could live with and one that offends the least amount of key demographics. As much as I hate to make predictions in this so far very strange campaign season, I'm going to guess that Santorum might just be the guy who gets the nod. He certainly has the momentum right now.

You’re insane if you think looks , charisma and that “it” factor is not important in politics.Sarah Palin had it more than anyone...

...now we know how Margaret Thatcher and Golda Meir hit it so big...or for that matter, Nancy Pelosi...

For you to say that I’m comparing a conservative governor of a State to a hollywood liberal actress who is not even a politician is ludicrous...

...geez, you’re feisty today, aren’t you? I merely responded to the completely irrelevant comment you made about Palin’s looks viv a vis presidential politics...by which logic of course Christine O’donnell would easily have beaten her Demo opponent, whose face is enough to curdle fresh drawn butter...

It’s not just looks that Sarah Palin had. She’s got ideas, leadership, has “it” etc. what Thatcher had . but Palin has more charisma and more looks imo than Thatcher. I am not saying that all you need is looks to win in politics.

My point is that Palin could beat Santorum, any in this primary and Obama. Agree or disagree?
