SAN ANTONIO -- Police say a homeowner on the city's northwest side shot a man in the head Wednesday morning for trying to steal a potted plant from his yard.
The homeowner, in his 60s, grabbed his handgun around 8 a.m. and took several shots a man he claims was stealing a potted plant and other items from his yard at 708 Shadwell, said Sgt. Chris Benavides, a spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department.
Officers caught up to the suspect at the Cabana Apartments, where he lives. He told officers that he had just finished dropping his kids off at school when he was shot in the head.
Benavides said the suspect allegedly stopped at the Shadwell Drive home on his way back from the school.
"When the homeowner saw that someone was trying to steal his plant he used his firearm, shot several times at the suspect," Benavides said. "The suspect was struck one time in the head area. It's my understanding that he was grazed by the bullet."
The suspect, in his 40s, was taken to an area hospital. Police said he will be charged with theft and possibly burglary.
Benavides said the homeowner is being questioned but will not likely be charged.

According to other news stories, the bullet ended up lodged between his skin and his skull. This sometimes happens with attempted suicides. The bullet can dig its own path under the skin, like a dog or cat under a blanket on a bed.
It is alleged to sting like a son-of-a-gun.
"Richie loved to use 22s because the bullets are small and they don't come out the other end like a 45, see, a 45 will blow a barn door out the back of your head and there's a lot of dry cleaning involved, but a 22 will just rattle around like Pac-Man until you're dead"
Homeowner needs more time at the shooting range.
Let me guess, another 45 year old illegal riding a girls bicycle to and from work?
No doubt there are goats in the courtyard and trash strewn everywhere. Search the rest of the apartment house, and they'll likely find multiple stolen items.
I don't think so, Criminals rarely change their behavior for any reason. About the only way you could be sure of his not stealing again is if he were dead.

At close range a 22 will kill a wild hog. Have done it. Not as messy as bigger caliber to clean up.
Anyone who discount a 22 in the right hands is a fool.
And there are some new loads that have both velocity and weight.
Many a steer started his trip to our freeze with a .22 Ruger.
I grew up using one.
I’m always annoyed by those who ‘snicker’ at them.
Some folks can do righteous things with a ‘lowly’ .22.
We have a meat processing building on our farm too. Walk in box, Hobart sausage mill, Hobart meat slicer, Hobart butchers band saw. Can get the job done.
We make smoked link beef sausage like they have made in Lockhart, TX for over 100 years. And have processed a lot of wild game. Our friends use the building for that.
22LR is what we normally use for killing the game.
We also trap nuisance varmits. They get the same treatment before we dump them along an abandoned railroad embankment. Lots of racoons we trapped here in town. They were into everything till we thinned them. Trapped about 30 in less than a year.
Don’t bring a potted plant to a gun fight.
A few years back a San Antonio homeowner shot at someone who was stealing a chicken. Apparently, every few weeks, the thief would steal one from a pen in the backyard. The homeowner shot at him with a bb gun..It killed the thief.
It's been several years ago, so I forget where the magic bb hit, but I remember the DEAD part.

Yep, at times not intended, other times aimed at.
You know, I doubt the homeowner would have cared much if the chicken thief was truly hungry. Most of Texas is like that. But there are those who’s actions do not allow the kindness of neighbors to apply. Sadly.
Thieves in TX were always frowned upon: horse thieves, cattle thieves, wife thieves. None of those are healthy occupations.
It is tough to find a place in Texas where the truly needy, and even the not so needy, cannot get free food from Food Banks and Churches. So there is very little reason to ever steal the possessions of another to eat.
I grew up on a farm where “store bought” was pretty scarce.
Thanksgiving Day was also hog butchering day.

All these years I still don’t care for market meat, overmuch.
It tastes..I dunno...anemic or something.
Don’t get me started on coons.
The dumb ass on the hill was feeding dozens of stray cats and the 20 lb bags of cat food put out _every day_ drew everything in.
Thanks to his “kindness” we got a rabies endemic and I got rabies shots after 3 of them attacked my dogs.

Every summer we’d have at least 3 of them show up in the yard or lane and get shot for their trouble but last year was the first time 3 showed up all at once.
I’m still messed up from the shots.
Everything aches like I’ve got polio or something.

We have lots of wild game here (except last years 100 year drought damaged the population).
But racoons are not “game”. I don’t know anyone foolish enough to eat them.
The “city hunters” are a big attraction to our area. Our pasture land is too small to be concerned about renting the hunting rights. That is for our family and friends.
When I was young there were very few deer, a few turkey, lots of dove, quite a few quail and an occasional wild hog. (the hogs have absolutely overrun us now) in the area. As the farms got larger and the population living in the country shrank the game increased.
Now there are many deer, lots of turkey, lots of dove (some species stay all year here), quail are rare this year because of drought.
My wife is one of those “city folks”, she thinks it is not food if it does not come from the grocery store. That has modified a bit since the 2 summers that we stayed at night with my grandmother (she had heart attack at 96 and we cared for her for over a year). Wife learned to appreciate fresh veggies.
Ya know, if the chicken thief had told the person he was hungry and didn’t have anything, he would been fed. Folks outside of cities are like that.
Yes, in my experience people in the country are like that.
We have a local food distribution activity at our church every Saturday.
In a town of < 700 people.
