Bunker Hill, IL - Macoupin County Board Chairman and candidate for State Senate in the 48th District Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) today called on Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to drop a deeply unpopular proposal that would require gun owners to register their handguns and pay a fee or face felony charges.
Im against it. Law-abiding gun owners are against it. And 48th District residents are against it, Manar said of the proposal. Downstate voters are fed up with Chicago dictating to us what they think is best.
Last week, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel demanded that the Illinois General Assembly require all handguns in Illinois be registered with the state. Gun owners could face felony charges if they failed to register and pay a $65 fee for each gun owned. They also would face criminal penalties if they did not report a gun lost or stolen.
There is an ongoing double standard when it comes to Chicago and the General Assembly. They want to dictate to Downstate, but they also want special exemptions all the time. And of course, they want law-abiding gun owners Downstate to pay for this awful proposal.
Manar said the General Assembly should focus its efforts on addressing gun violence in an effective way. He supports community policing efforts and community based programs and organizations like Ceasefire, which intervene after crimes to prevent further violence from occurring. A statewide gun registry isnt going to stop violence being committed by criminals, but a community working together can.
Manar believes there is a Constitutional right to keep and bear arms guaranteed by the Second Amendment. I believe the Mayors proposal is a clear infringement on that right.
Nope, not in Illinois.
Agree. Rahm like things they way the are, only the corrupt government currently have guns. Kinda like in the old Soviet Union where only the military, KGB and the like had access to firearms. But, I say let Chicago go the same way as Detroit and other upper midwest cities - the long spiral down the toilet, yeaaa :)

Rahm just signed a check for $400 K for violating RKBA.
Of course, it wasn’t his money...
Word is that Rahm wants a play-off of sorts. Drop the pending CC bill and Rahm will drop the registration nonsense.
According to my guy, it's not going to happen for Rahm this time.
I speculated on that very point yesterday. Post 15:

“This is a negotiation tactic by Rahm. Put forward the ridiculous registration issue so it can be traded away. He is losing in the courts on this, and the State legislature is getting close to passing a shall issue law despite his opposition.”
Make cops register their drop guns? Sounds good... wait this isn’t that?
That would be very good for most people in IL if it happened. We can always pray for it, that it gets passed (the cc bill).
