Relative: Mother of Drowned Toddler Sought Help, But Was Turned Away SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- A South Los Angeles mother accused of using a baby bathtub to try to drown her two young daughters could make her first appearance in court Thursday.
Authorities say Lorna Valle drowned her one-year-old daughter, Lindsay Stephanie Taque-Valle, and also attempted to drown her 5-year-old daughter, Marian, by shoving their faces into the small tub, said Deputy Police Chief Pat Gannon.
Marian remains hospitalized at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. She has been upgraded to serious but stable condition from critical condition.
Valle, who may have a history of mental illness, was taken into custody and booked for murder and attempted murder. Her bail was set at $1.5 million.
Valle is currently on a three-day psychiatric hold at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
"We believe she is responsible for what happened to these two children," LAPD Cmdr. Andy Smith said.
It happened around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 900 block of W. 50th Street.
The father came home from the grocery store to find his wife trying to drown the girls, police said.
A neighbor told KTLA that when the father returned, he heard shouts of "My babies! My babies!"
Dina Ceballos, who lived across the street, told the Los Angeles Times that she heard the father say, "If I didn't get out, my girls would still be alive."
"He was screaming and saying, 'Why didn't she kill herself instead of trying to kill my girls?'" Ceballos said.
The girls were found in the bathroom of a small converted garage where the family lived, Smith said.
He said the children were "not conscious and not breathing when the fire department arrived."
Neighbors who witnessed the aftermath told KTLA the toddler was purple and "in really bad shape."

He said she was an illegal alien and wanted to go back home. Valle was very depressed, according to Padillas.
He said they took her to the hospital, but she was not treated because she had no papers. Any hospital would of sent a mental health case worker to the ER to make an assessment of the patient, interview her and decide what next to do next.I do not buy she was turned away.
I’m having considerable difficulty believing the excuse.
This is some crazy story. ERs do not demand “papers”.
Seriously - they dont even ask for papers when you run for president...
NO ONE is turned away, it is the law.
Beyond that, if the family knew she was on the verge of a break, why didn’t someone (relative) take the kids.
Yep. I had an interesting accident a few years ago, in Sedona AZ and was whisked away in an ambulance, I was in the hospital two days before they even asked me if I had insurance. All they wanted to know immediately was if I was allergic to any meds.
They took care of me first.
The woman either didn’t go or is just lying.
Theres multi-million regrettable stories in Mexifornia..
AND this is merely only one of them... that a bodacious fence on the Mexican border would help with..
I've seen other stories making similar claims. I think it's an attempt to infer that, "See? With Free Medical Care for All, this wouldn't happen!"

It’s nice to see people coming here illegally, take advantage of all we have to give them, those 2 children were paid for with our tax dollars..now we’re to blame for thid illegals killing her child???? Why in the world don’t these who sneak in here and blame us for their shortcomings stay at home and change THEIR government in Mexico, instead of changing ours. I haven’t heard of any Americans sneaking into Mexico, taking advantage of their “free” medical aid, free food, no tax pay, and the list goes on.
A one year old and a five year old, how tragic!
They have been in the US 10 years. I am supposing she gave birth in a hospital without papers. I am suspect of the ‘she was turned away’ story.
If her family knew she sought professional help for her mental state and was turned away, why weren’t they helping her with the children?
How long before they sue...
They will ask her if she has any plans to hurt herself or others. If she says no, and there are no flagrant danger signals, I wouldn’t expect them to keep her.
If she says, I am so down, I cannot stop crying, I just want to go home, but no I am not going to hurt anyone, they will probably put a referral to a community health group in her hand.
If her family is worried about her and the children in spite of what she says, it is their responsibility not to leave her alone.
Couldn't afford a doctor.../s
Because us taxpayers should pay for it!

Both of those poor little girls look so sad...

You know if they really did this, every supporter in town would be all over this and illegals do not sit still when they do not get what they want.
I doubt they even inquire about your legal tatus
