Newt Gingrich speaks to Asian American and Jewish groups in L.A.

LOS ANGELES - Wilshire Boulevard, which collides with many enclaves as it wends through Los Angeles, is the perfect thoroughfare for a presidential aspirant looking to woo niche voters.

Newt Gingrich made his pitch Thursday to two distinctly different groups along Wilshire: Asian American business leaders in Koreatown, and Jewish voters who paid to lunch and pose for photos with the former House speaker in an Italian restaurant in Beverly Hills.

Gingrich, who arrived in California on Monday, has trailed badly in polls and fared poorly in the last five states to hold voting contests. Despite calls in some Republican quarters for him to quit the race, which would presumably allow the surging Rick Santorum to mount a more cohesive conservative challenge to Mitt Romney, Gingrich says he is staying in.

"This thing has had a wild rhythm," Gingrich told reporters after his Koreatown event. "It resembles riding the Space Mountain in Disney. I've been the front-runner twice. I suspect I will be the front-runner again in a few weeks."

-snip-

Ky Chueon Kim, a 69-year-old business administration professor, said he wanted to support Gingrich: "I want to say, 'Don't give up!' He has a lot of experience compared to the other candidates. I think we need his knowledge."

-snip-

He defended the right of Israel to "launch an operation designed to dramatically slow down or disrupt the Iranian nuclear system.... Three nuclear weapons in the right place in Israel is literally, in a matter of seconds, the second Holocaust."

Whack-a-mole at play by Romeny and his ilk.

We are seeing what Newt is made of, as he fights on with the deck stacked against him.

Gingrich’s support has already collapsed and re-risen and collapsed again. It’s over. He should do the right thing and help Santorum beat Romney.

No. He should extend Rick and his supporters the same courtesy and stay in the race.

I disagree. Romney would be DOA tomorrow if Gingrich backed out.

Saint Rick’s platform does not warrant Newt dropping out to “help” him.

If Saint Rick at least had a good platform, I’d forgive his Sanctimonius nature.

He doesn’t, so I can’t.

I guess you aren’t serious about stopping Romney.

I dislike Romney because he has nothing to offer and is a very mediocre and dishonest candidate.

I don’t see how it would be logical for me to support anybody but Romney regardless of their own platform and record. Why would I support Saint Rick when he doesn’t give me a reason to vote for him other than religion/social issues and the fact that he isn’t Obozo or Myth?

Newt Gingrich’s California Factor......."The California Republican primary isn’t until June 5, but Michael Schroeder, Gingrich’s state political director, said if by Super Tuesday the race is still a three or four man split, California could suddenly come into play.

Gingrich has long said he’s in the race until the convention, even saying Thursday his goal was “to go to Tampa.”

California awards 172 delegates, and was a winner-take-all state in previous Republican presidential primary elections. This election cycle the state will award proportional delegates for the first time, and delegates are bound based on a win in one of the 53 congressional districts. Each district awards three delegates, and an additional 10 at-large delegates are bound to the state-wide winner.

“If you win a couple of congressional districts, you get can get as many as you would have gotten in New Hampshire just out of two congressional delegates,” Schroeder said. “So everything’s going to change in terms of how California’s campaigned to. We’ll be campaigned to like we’re several different states.”

Schroeder said there are districts with only four or five thousand Republicans, such as in the San Francisco Bay area and Los Angeles.

“Most of them are either Asian, African American or Hispanic. And so you’re going to see for the first time presidential candidates aggressively campaigning to Asians, blacks and Hispanics in California, because they can win significant numbers of delegates,” Schroeder said.".....

I’m absolutely convinced that Newt Gingrich is the junkyard dog we need to rip Obama a new one and send him running back to his Chicago slime pit with his tail between his legs. Newt has plenty of DC experience as Speaker, executive ability from his many enterprises, and a silver tongue that’s razor sharp! He’s fast on his feet, delivers it straight up with no hemming and hawing, and is often witty. His work with American Solutions was very impressive and as we’ve seen recently, Newt is able to put into words what the vast majority of Americans really believe. His fevered brain also has plenty of ideas for making government work better for taxpayers. Is Newt pure as new driven snow? No - none of the presidential candidates are in line for sainthood. Whatever Newt’s “baggage”, it pales next to Obama’s habitual lying and outright corruption - and unlike Obama, Newt is 100% American! Newt is like Larry the Cable Guy: send him to DC and he’ll “Get ‘er done” for all of us. Junkyard dogs are not show dogs, but they’ll save your bacon! I am damn mad at what Obama and his bootlickers have stolen from us - you should be too - and I want someone to represent me. Newt is my man! Go git ‘im, Newt!

You know what is sad? People on Fr are for the flavor of the week!

People who were for Perry and Cain, switched to Newt.. So why abandon Newt, just because Sansnorum is flavor of the week?

Is it because, people want to back the person winning at the time?

Seriously, what is it? It can't be that people actually think Santorum/sansnorum can beat Obama? I am a social and fiscal conservative, but Santorum shows me nothing on fiscal side!

Newt spells out what he wants to do, and that is shake up DC! Rick is a limp noodle who needs some guidance before he is given the top spot. If not, and should by some miracle, he beats Obama, you are going to see GWB actions in his last 4 years! Rick will not shake up anything!!!! Mitt will not shake up anything!!! WE need to clean house and Newt will do it. and I have no doubt about it! Read and think people! We are talking about saving our nation, not just going along to get along!

Santorum’s platform is more air than boards. Gaseous platitudes and promises.

Santorum: I’m such a conservative
Romney: I’m a severe conservative
Newt: Here’s what we’re gonna do:

(because you already KNOW he’s a conservative)

Try to find some actual plans in Santorum’s speeches. You can’t. He’s way too busy telling us how pure a conservative he is in his beliefs.

You are right, Sarah is not running.. People need to think about that.. i love her but she is not running!

so who she like? She likes Newt!!!

She praises Santorum on social views, but this election is like none other in our time and while our social views are important, our main concern is the economy and foreign affairs.. There is only one person that fits that bill, who is also a social conservative! That is Newt! Rick and Mitt are both empty suits and for the life of me, I just don't understand, the Santorum cheerleading!

Gravitas, has been changed to bona fides and no one but Newt has those, or the heart to kick ass in DC!! Wake up people, Rick is Mitt light!

California Republicans, pay attention to this!

This is a big, big deal.

Winning back California for the Republican Party means winning ethnic minority votes. Get your candidate to start putting together campaign material written in Spanish, Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese. Get organizers who have contacts in the local church community and ethnic businesses. Recognize that for Asians, white hair and experience definitely **DO** count.

I'm a Santorum supporter, but that's not relevant here. What **IS** relevant is that Republican candidates need to start learning how to reach ethnic minority voters, especially Asians and Hispanics, who in many cases should be Republicans but aren't.

We need to do that today in California. It won't be long before we need to do the same thing throughout the United States. White guys like me aren't increasing in numbers, and the reality is that as an Italian, a century ago I would have been considered a “dirty Dago,” a member of a despised immigrant minority.

In my county in rural Missouri where there are many Korean wives married to American soldiers, the annual Chuseok (Korean thanksgiving) celebration routinely attracts three to four hundred people, including most of the major local candidates for the Republican and Democratic parties. That kind of attendance makes Chuseok one of our county's largest festivals, and it's a voter-rich environment. The Republican Party produced campaign brochures in Korean in 2008 and widely distributed them throughout the Korean community. Our county has one of the highest percentages of Asians in the whole state of Missouri due to Fort Leonard Wood, and that should illustrate why ethnic voters are becoming important not only in California but throughout the United States.
