Gingrich to play up southern roots in Georgia campaign swing (Newt 43% Mittens 29% Santorum 12%)

ATLANTA – The campaign trail in Georgia is getting crowded.

With less than three weeks left until the state's March 6 presidential primary, candidates in the topsy-turvy Republican race are turning their attention to Super Tuesday's biggest delegate prize.

Newt Gingrich will play up his roots when he returns to his old home state to campaign for two days, beginning with a rally in Peachtree City Friday night.

Surging after a trio of wins in recent weeks, Rick Santorum will focus on his evangelical base, appearing Sunday night at a "God and Country" rally at First Redeemer Church in Cumming.

Mitt Romney headlined a rally in Atlanta last week and a political action committee backing the former Massachusetts governor has purchased a modest amount of air time in the state to run an anti-Gingrich ad. And Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said Thursday the candidate plans to spend "a lot of time campaigning in Georgia and Ohio ahead of Super Tuesday."

With 76 delegates at stake -- the most of the 10 Super Tuesday states -- the three GOP candidates are eying Georgia closely.

Texas Congressman Ron Paul won a Republican Party straw poll in the state last summer but hasn't been seen in the state campaigning.

Gingrich clearly holds an edge. The former House speaker represented a suburban Atlanta district for two decades and was in the trenches building up the state Republican Party at a time when Democrats dominated Georgia politics.

A recent poll confirmed Gingrich's front-runner status in the state. The survey, conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc., found Gingrich leading Romney 43 percent to 29 percent among likely voters in Georgia.

Santorum had 12 percent, while Paul trailed with 6 percent

And the Rev Santimonious sure got snippy with Charlie Rose this morning. He had that sneering look on his face and came across with his usually pained facial expressions. The tone of his voice is also very annoying. I'm certain that the American people are going to be seriously turned off over him, rather soon. Now that all the attention is finally on him.

It's time for them to realize; “WOW! I traded Newt for this?!”

um yeah, care to look at the dates of the most recent polls there? 2 were Pre Feb 7 and the most recent one was After. Common sense given all the other polling would suggest that the post Feb-7 poll is the most accurate.

Most likely another poll will come out shortly, matching or exceeding the Rosetta Stone numbers.

It's almost funny, now that Santo is in the lead we are supposed to freeze the standings where they are today. And Leave the Reverend Santomonious alone!

And never forget, Newt is done, it's impossible for him to beat Santo now. Got it?

Oh, when Gingrich travels through the land of cotton,
Old roots there are not forgotten
It’s in play! It’s in play! It’s in play, Dixie Land!

In Dixie Land, when Mitt’s attack ads threaten
Don’t look now, they’ll be expected
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixie Land!

I wish Newt could in Dixie, Debate! Debate!
In Dixie Land he’ll take his stand
to win and thrive in Dixie
A win, a win, a win down south in Dixie
He’ll WIN! He’ll WIN! He’ll WIN down south in Dixie!

GO NEWT!!!

It’s time Saint Rick dropped out of the race so the conservative vote can coalesce around a real conservative candidate.

Sometimes people seem to forget that RCP doesn’t conduct its own survey, only take the average of existing polls out there. Their numbers only matter if the polls are taken in similar period of time and no ‘structural break’ like Santorum’s 3-state winning take place.

“Almost fell outa my chair when I saw the headline for this thread. Nothing against Yankees mind you, but it’s a total joke to say Newt has “Georgia roots. He’s a pure Pennsylvania Yankee. He talks like a Yankee, he walks like a Yankee, and he probably has hash browns for breakfast instead of grits.”

I’m born and raised in Texas, the most conservative state in the union, and usually I eat beans and eggs soaked in picante sauce for breakfast, along with homemade tortillas. Puts hair on your chest like a real man.

Maybe he should run for governor of Georgia?

He could always do that in 8 years I suppose.

Technically speaking, no county in Louisiana has ever voted democrat ;-)

Exactly. In fact, it's not even a given that Newt will win GA, which is still weeks away.

Newt just received another $10 million in campaign funds from his Nevada friends. Yay. He’s in it to win it.

Fantastic. First I have heard about it.

“I’m sure it will be pointed out by the Newt Brigade that he’s actually from Pennsylvania.”

He was born in Pennsylvania. He’s was actually raised all over the world, France when he was 15, etc.,while his step father was in the Army. He’s kind of nomad with respect to what ‘home’ is, like McCain. Maybe while he’s in Georgia, they’ll ask him why he never came back and stayed in DC instead.
