Pride of Britain: Falkland Islanders stage 4x4 convoy to tell Sean Penn where to stick his views

The Falkland Islands put on a show of strength against Argentine aggression and outspoken left-wing Hollywood actor Sean Penn - with a mile-long convoy of 4x4s. Dozens of Union Flag-waving Falklanders snaked their way out of the capital Stanley yesterday afternoon in a patriotic blur of red, white and blue. The procession, which looked at times like a summer carnival parade, is unlikely to scare Argentina into not launching an attack on the dispute archipelago. It is also doubtful it will force Penn, who has consistently backed Argentina in recent days, to keep his mouth shut. But it does act as a message from the 3,000 islanders who, amidst increasing tensions between Britain and Argentina, remain keen to stay under London's control.

That’s for sure... everyone I met there (was there 2 years ago) was very much in the “we’re British” camp.

They are one step ahead of things though, since they still have all their land mines in the fields from the last war.

I understand the people of the Falkland Islands being pro-UK but what I don’t understand is, these islands are off the coast of Argentina. It took British warships three weeks to sail there during the Falklands war. It looks like they should belong to Argentina. What if the Channel Islands off the coast of California were claimed by Australia? Just saying, just wondering.

Bermuda is about 800 miles from the NC Coast and the Falklands is 400 miles from Argentina. There are two islands Saint Pierre and Miquelon which are part of France that are about 10 miles from Newfoundland but Canada does not go around demanding them from France.

British people have lived there for more than 100 years. It’s as much British territory as London. And the people that live there want to stay British citizens. So the government of Britain will defend them. More power to them. Self determination is important.

The Falklands were first populated by the British. Argentina was first populated by the Spanish. The PEOPLE who live in the Falklands want to keep things the way they are. (And I'm not talking about just 53%!)

The Falkland islands never were Argentinian. The people there have no ties to Argentina. There is not a displaced population from the Falklands living in Argentina longing for return.

I believe during WWII, that was the site of the first victory of the Free French, over the Vichy Government.

Alaska is closer to Canada and Russia than it is to the US mainland. I guess that means it should belong to one of them.

The Falkland Islands are hundreds of miles of Argentina. They were never settled by Spaniards or Argentinians. The unpopulated Islands were settled by French and British. The British won full ownership. The locals are British and have made their desires clear. Your support for communist imperialism under the guise of third worldist anti-Imperialism is unbecoming.

Um.... we BOUGHT Alaska from Russia in 1867.

Also, you can get from Seattle to Alaska and back, by ship, with several nice stops along the way, in one week.

It would seem the Argentinians should concentrate on more important things than these rocks in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. If a referendum were held on who the local residents would give their allegiance to, Britain would win hands down. Has somebody discovered oil or gold there in the last 30 years?
