Questions Surface On Gingrich Campaign Travel Payments By Luke Rosiak February 17, 2012

When Newt Gingrich’s campaign disclosed in October it planned to pay the candidate $70,000 for travel expenses in the third quarter, the transfer was an anomaly among presidential campaigns.

But weeks ago, the former House speaker revised his third-quarter bill: He actually expected to personally receive $115,000 of the funds donated to his campaign to reimburse himself for expenses during that period.

The campaign would not explain how the candidate forgot about $45,000 in receipts, what they were for or why the campaign wasn’t simply paying the invoices directly, as other campaigns do. Far beyond that payment, the uses of donations to Mr. Gingrich’s campaign are being obscured on a massive scale by the unprecedented use of a legally questionable tactic, The Washington Times found one that has accompanied the flow of the better part of a million dollars in unexplained cash to Mr. Gingrich, family members and top staffers.

The money reportedly was to reimburse employees for unspecified expenses in what amounted to petty cash exceeding their entire salaries, The Times’s analysis of federal records showed. The move would be permitted only if, election lawyers say, that money was spread across so many vendors that not a single company received more than $200 in total.

“That’s an enormous amount of money, and not $200 wound up in the same place? I find that extraordinarily hard to believe,” said Brett Kappel, an election-law lawyer for Arent Fox LLC, a law firm and lobbying group based in Washington, D.C. “I’ve never seen a major presidential campaign run this way but I’ve only been doing this for 21 years.

“If this recurs throughout the campaign, this is the kind of issue where you get audited,” he said.

But would you think that before it ran this story, the WT would have sought to obtain an explanation from the Gingrich campaign? Are you claiming reckless journalism by the WT?

He has nothing. He doesn’t know why Adelson is not supporting Rick. It could any number of reasons that he has no clue about.

The funds raised in these FReepathons go to pay our current quarter expenses. But we're also going to try to replace some of our older servers and failing equipment this year so we're going to add a little extra to our FReepathon goals. John is estimating ten to fifteen thousand to do this and I'd like to get it all in place and working before the election cycle is fully heated up, so we'll try to bring in a little extra now, if we can, and the rest next quarter.

Time will tell. It is of course quite telling that a conservative news outlet carried the investigation in this case to conclude that nearly $1m went unexplained for in cash to close family members and staff. Couldn’t they find at least “some” explanation?

I’m certain this will come out fine. Gingrich’s elder daughter, is the senior adviser of her father’s presidential campaign.

Looking at a dissection of the Perry campaign, it really doesn’t seem too far out of whack.

Gingrich struggled in the start and had accumulated debt in trying to hang in there. I don’t think they will be getting rich from this.

It is not illegal for federal candidates to pay family members for political work, as long as they are paid fair market value, the Federal Election Commission has ruled.

The most recent article I recall was Scott Browns daughter singing. Many do it.

You better look around. It’s the Santobots who like to post negative threads about Gingrich. I in-turn will stick to the Gingrich threads, but it’s you SantoBots who come in there to spew on positive Newt articles. I don’t go to Santorum threads to snipe at him. Again to be clear, I respond after you guys have first pooped on Gingrich so I defend him against the nonsense.

The so called Sanbots have a solid argument. I am tired of you folks tearing him down. He is a solid Conservative. Deal with it.

I wonder if Newt will chicken out from going on with that debate in Georgia or will he still go on with it knowing that those questions will be asked at Newt’s pity party ?
