Ohio university restricts radio station on buses

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- Officials at an Ohio university have ordered radios on campus shuttle buses be locked into one station and volume restricted after a student complained a driver was a playing a "far-right Christian political" channel at high volume.

The Blade newspaper reports the policy was suggested by the University of Toledo's manager of transit services and gives drivers only an on/off option. In a memo, the manager, Steven John Wise, describes the selected station as "nonoffensive, work place type music, helpful weather info." Radio volume also is being restricted as a safety measure.

The student made the complaint to university president Lloyd Jacobs on Jan. 26 and said the bus had become "a mobile proselytizing unit." The student said those attending a state university expect to be free from forced religious and political views.

"The content of these broadcasts is blatantly offensive, derogatory, and abusive to anyone not in line with the very extreme views of those speaking," the complaint says. "Issues such as women's rights, sexual rights, and reproductive rights all come under constant attack. I can only imagine how someone affected deeply by any of these issues might feel being a captive audience to such abuse."

The fire and brimstone on today’s Christian radio rarely gets above convenience store hand warmer temps. Offensive, really? It seems that this students internal offenserator is set to stun.

I pray for this country.

I’d lay odds the complaining student is majoring in Wymyn Studies or some major involving the term “Genderqueer” in much of the coursework.

That said, I’m sure there are radio stations out there whose content would annoy me. I wouldn’t run crying to the university, though. I’d just tune them out. I don’t begrudge these shuttle drivers the opportunity to listen to something that keeps them entertained while running from point A to point B all week long. I don’t personally see it as the same thing as a guy playing his radio in the office. The law might disagree with me on that, but I don’t see anyone forcing these kids to ride the shuttle bus or their livelihood being potentially disrupted by it.

About the only thing I *would* agree with is the order to keep the volume down to a reasonable level. That’s just good manners, and good defensive driving.

God forbid this highly educated yout hears anything that contradicts the gospel truth his perfessors brainwashed him into believing. Dissenting religious and political views are absolutely not allowed on college campuses, doncha know? Sounds like to bus driver was listening to Rush.

Play this for the fun of it.

If they were playing a station bashing Christianity, capitalism, etc. I can guarantee they would not get a complaint from what I can assume is a Women's Studies or Art type major.

Perhaps we can use this new precedent to get CNN out of airports.

At my school they used 15 passenger vans so they could student drives and avoid a CDL. The drivers would usually play music from the radio or music from a iPod, normally a mix of classic rock, pop, alternative and less often rap, unless a baseball game was on.

Knowing them they would replace it with PMSNBC.

Though I do have to say, when I was in school, the TV’s in the academic building common rooms/lounges/mini-restaurants were frequently tuned to either sports or Fox News. In one room the two big 40” flat screens almost always had ESPN on one and Fox News on the other. CNN was relegated to the 19” CRT in the corner. The ones that couldn’t (easily) be changed by students seemed to always have CNN or MSNBC on at all the times.

The funds raised in these FReepathons go to pay our current quarter expenses. But we're also going to try to replace some of our older servers and failing equipment this year so we're going to add a little extra to our FReepathon goals. John is estimating ten to fifteen thousand to do this and I'd like to get it all in place and working before the election cycle is fully heated up, so we'll try to bring in a little extra now, if we can, and the rest next quarter.

They do??? Have they talked to any current students to see if that was a reasonable expectation? If it is, will all the leftist profs have to stop preaching from the lectern, so to speak?

I don't want bus drivers wearing ear phones. They cut out way too much sound from around them. I want them to be paying attention to the road.
