During a 2002 ABC interview Whitney Houston told an inquiring Diane Sawyer that “crack is wack.” She was correct: Crack is wack, and in the final analysis, abusing it (and many, many other drugs and alcohol) whacked Whitney.
This past Saturday Whitney Houston joined the ignoble ranks of Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse, Frankie Lymon, Bon Scott, Elvis Presley, Keith Moon, John Bonham and literally hundreds of other musicians who died base and appalling drug- and alcohol-related deaths. What a shame.
For the life of me, I don’t get why New Jersey Governor Chris Christie wants to award this unheroic, pathetic and scary tale with flags flown at half-staff. Are we going to honor the life of every other singer who dies a drug addict with that which I believe is supposed to be reserved for presidents, vice presidents, chief justices, speakers of the House of Representatives, governors, members of Congress, leading citizens such as Martin Luther King, Jr., or people who have died while serving the United States? How is Whitney Houston on par with the aforementioned? Sure, she could croon, but she also funded drug dealers aplenty with her vast capital and long years of abuse.
Look, I’m neither a fan nor a foe of the deceased Houston. What I am a fan of is our kids not following her self-destructive path. Instead of Christie flying flags at half-staff he ought to come out and use his bully pulpit to drive home these seven lessons from a woman who had it all and crashed and burned.
1. Talent and mega money equals squat and can be your undoing if you do not have godly character undergirding your natural gifts. Just because you have talent, little children, doesn’t mean you’re bulletproof. Matter of fact, insane talent opens one up to insane temptations. Be afraid.
2. You’re responsible for your actions. All the talking heads on various talk shows are yapping about how Whitney had a “disease.” A disease, my backside. If her lifestyle was the result of a disease, well, that’s a disease I’d like to have because I could do something about it—unlike cancer. I had this drug-abusing “disease” from the ages of 13 through 21, and I got cured; I smoked weed every day, snorted tons of coke and dropped a lot of acid … and my disease went away. You know how I did it? I repented of my sins, begged God to change my life and put myself under accountability … and boom! … I was cured of my “disease.”
3. Don’t hang out with, nor marry, a moron. Get around people who’ll rebuke you when you are acting like a tool. Yes, hang out with friends who’ll hit you with a tranquilizing dart or whisk you off to an exorcist when they see you torching a rock.
4. If you find out your friend or spouse is a death-dealing dbag, run in the opposite direction of said enabler. Like, right now. And if you get lonely and want a friend then get a dog. I recommend a pit-bull. They’re loving pets and will scare the crap out of any Bobby Brown trying to weasel his way back into your life.
5. If you’re a 48-year-old parent that means you cannot act like an 18-year-old freshman during pledge week.
6. Also note that when you toy with the demonic that the powers of darkness play for keeps.
7. And lastly, I don’t care who you are or if you can sing like a canary: When you die—and you will—you will have to give an account of your life before God, and you cannot sing your way out of that tête-à-tête.
Read that the stuff ruined her gifted voice-—she had no voice left......and it was obvious it had destroyed her ravishing beauty.
Her ex should be flogged in the public square-—he was the one that apparently got her addicted.
Right on, Kaslin — in your post and in your response to the vitriolic attack by databoss.
Frankly, I am getting a little sick of the personal — and, yes, sophomoric — attacks on FR by people who ridicule any stand taken on moral grounds reflecting traditional values.
If I want to endure the musings of those who put “toleration” above all else (and endlessly bleat about being “non-judgmental”), I’ll move over to Daily Kos and swim in the liberal sewer.

I wish the music industry would put half their effort spent mourning their dead into wiping out the cause—their out of control drug culture.
You’re expecting the Music Industry of all people to clean this up?
The Moody Blues made a total of $500 to split 6 ways from their first gold 45. Then they formed Threshold Records in response. Nothing’s changed since then.
Has it occurred to you that the waiting line for a contract is 99 miles long 24/7 7 days a week? Houston and everybody else is replaceable.
It’s a Lot Easier to screw artists even with Top Music Lawyers if the Artists are kept off balance, or keep themselves off balance with drugs and drink.

Never understood the public obsession with celebrity culture, and why her death has become such a media event with everyone thumping their chests to outdo each other in their grief is beyond me. It was disappointing to see Gov. Christie pander to the public by using his office to lower the flag in her memory. Sure she was a once-talented singer but was her death really deserving of such a state honor? It’s not like she was some firefighter hero who died while saving a baby from a burning building. Rather, she was a self-indulgent addict who had every whim catered to for the last thirty years.

Since when is a mild critique a ‘vitriolic attack’? If I had said “the imebecilic author can’t form a single coherent thought because they are obviously a misogynistic Tea Party racist”, then you could call that a personal attack filled with vitriol. Get a grip on yourself man. Dissent and criticism are part and parcel of civil discourse, use your brain power to counter arguments instead of casting stones....
Drugs cost. Hanger-ons cost.
But I'd like to see Bobby Brown's bank account(s).
He may not have started her on the drug/behavior downfall - I don't know - but he sure did accelerate it. He and his fellow bandmates honored the contract last night and put on their show. Too bad he could not honor WH in her life and in her passing.
And, we cannot fathom His ways but we can know He is here and with His help, the hurt becomes more bearable.

It is so easy to be hyperjudgmental when one is not in that situation.
Drug addiction *is* a disease. Not everyone is susceptible to it, and not everyone has the same degree of susceptibility. A highly susceptible person’s brain can be changed so much by drugs that they literally become powerless to stay away from them.
Clearly, there is more going on with a severely addicted person than just a desire to go “have a good time”. Maybe, at first, it’s fun, but once the addiction takes hold, and their life is falling apart all around them, it’s no longer a rational decision to keep using the drugs. Even while they know the drugs are destroying them, they keep using them. That is a strong indication that an addiction really does take over a person’s life, and they have little control over it.
I think that within the entertainment world, the situation for people prone to drug abuse is far worse than it is for ordinary people. The entertainment industry in general is very tolerant of drug use, and there are plenty of leeches ready to provide whatever the stars desire, because they want the money. Whitney is not the first star to be crushed by the entertainment industry, nor will she be the last.
Our government puts over $1 billion per year into drug addiction research. That wouldn’t be necessary if “just say no” were an actual workable solution to drug abuse.
No need to be hypersensitive. Perhaps you simply need to study your vocabulary more assiduously to learn the distinctions between connotations and annotations in the lexicon. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
