Michigan Man Burns NJ Flag In Response To Houston Tribute
February 19, 2012 11:15 AM

KALAMAZOO, MI (CBSNewYork) – A Kalamazoo, Michigan man whose son, Eric, died in Iraq in 2005, was outraged when he heard that flags in New Jersey were being flown at half-staff for the death of Whitney Houston.

John Burri decided to burn the New Jersey state flag on his outdoor grill as a form of protest.

Burri said that he believes the lowering of flags should be reserved for those who have given their lives for their country.

Sounds like he needs to chill. I don’t like it but the Jersey law allows for the lowering of the state flag for famous Jersey residents.

W.H. did a great job with our National Anthem. I will not begrudge this honor -—

And? Maybe she has now kept Christie off of the GOP ticket?

I think pressure needs to be applied to change the law.

They can call it Whitney’s law if the want to appease anyone.

State flag OK ... U.S. flag not OK. My understanding is that NJ lowered both in tribute to Whitney ...

Just goes to show you that politicians from both parties care more about votes than they do values of their constituents.

Absolutely agree with you and with the father.

How he must suffer deeply the loss of his son. God bless & comfort him.

Honoring Whitney Houston with half staff of flag cuts me to the bone that real heroes who defend and protect us and our Constitution really aren't due the half staff flag or even much at all.

I heard that Clarence Clemmons (of Springsteen-sic-band) also had a half staff as did Frank Sinatra.

What's up with that, New Jersey? Maybe someone - a modern day Betsy Ross - could design a flag for fallen celebrities. Can't be a rainbow flag - already taken. Maybe the drama and comedy faces could be on it. Just sayin'...

...aren’t being honored and given their righteous due.... First post I think I kinda’ made it sound like I thought the military weren’t due half staff either. They most certainly are due that and all else they need to be given assistance as they transit when they get back home. Sorry, haven’t had but one ice cream for breakfast yet.

Margaret Woodrow Wilson's recording of the National Anthem is better--even though I'm not a big a fan of her dad.

I agree with this fellow - flying the flag at half-staff i suppose to be reserved for those who have given their lives for this nation - not talented “idols” who throw their lives away in drugs and alcohol...
