Santorum: Democrats are "anti-science," not me
CBS News ^ | February 20, 2012 | Rebecca Kaplan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Portraying himself as a native son of Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum Monday emphasized his heritage as the grandson of a coal miner and railed against environmental regulations that have diminished the coal industry in the region.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we need someone who understands, who comes from the coal fields, who comes from the steel mills, who understands what average working people in America need to be able to provide for themselves and their families," Santorum said to a crowd of about 500 people in the Democratic-leaning eastern edge of the state.

In his remarks Monday, Santorum went beyond his usual discussion of the importance of increasing domestic energy production to deliver a blistering attack on environmental activists. He said global warming claims are based on "phony studies," and that climate change science is little more than "political science."

His views are not "anti-science" as Democrats claim, Santorum said. "When it comes to the management of the Earth, they are the anti-science ones. We are the ones who stand for science, and technology, and using the resources we have to be able to make sure that we have a quality of life in this country and (that we) maintain a good and stable environment," he said to applause, and cited local ordinances to reduce coal dust pollution in Pittsburgh during the heyday of coal mining.

(snip)

Santorum also discussed religious faith and the importance of family at length, a popular topic for him in many of the Midwestern states he has visited recently. He accused President Obama of degrading the institution of marriage with provisions in his health care law.

That’s like saying Leftists are anti-war or anti-religion. Both are completely false.

If war, science, or religion is being used to defeat the collectivist agenda they are completely against it. If it aids and abets them they’ll use it any way they can.

For them war, science, and religion are just a means to an end.

"Santorum's claim to have come "from the coal fields" is a stretch - by two generations. He has never worked in a coal mine. His parents' professions were psychologist and nurse, and Santorum is a lawyer who has spent all of his adult life in politics."

_____________

The above quote is from the article. I thought Rick's father was a coal miner. So was it his grandfather who was a coal miner or what???

Well he’s right. Skepticism is the heart of science and liberals are now trying to remove it. That’s an anti science position.

Of course the Libs are in convulsions right now. They hate the truth.

Coal, gas and oil extraction is a science where those opposed to the extraction are anti-science.

They’d deny it.

As someone already stated - religion, science, charity, “caring” - all are means to the end of advancing their communist agenda.

Lib outrage over conservative ideas is the equivalent of using ALL CAPS...it doesn't persuade and it's annoying.

GRANDFATHER was a coal miner. Father psychologist.

Li'l Rick got his bachelors one year, masters the next, several years later law degree.

Not exactly pulling oneself up by his bootstraps.

I think Santorum is okay on many of his scientific views, but teaching intelligent design in school is a little too extreme.

Teach evolution in schools, and creationism in church.

science is a method of studying reality.

To be truly using science, one must be able to observe, repeat, and provide circumstances under which their hypothesis would be considered false.

There are many “beliefs” these days held by leftists and secularists that don’t fit at least one of these criteria, yet claim they are “scientific” and anyone who opposes them are “unscientific” or “anti-science”.

I was amused when reading about Marx that his most-used criticism of anyone questioning his theories was that his opponents were “unscientific” and therefore not worthy of entering the discussion. Does anyone see any similarities? :)

IE, exclude any evidence that doesn’t fit your pre-conceived worldview.

No not really. I want a science class supported by evidence from the scientific community. Something that students of varying religions can take with them and apply to their study of theology at their house of worship.

Teach evolution in schools, and creationism in church.

What a load. Right off the top, evolution is a theory (One I happen to embrace) and creationism is a matter of faith (one I also happen to embrace). That said, secularizing the schools is a "liberal" position.

The Left’s opening salvo on Rick is to try to use his faith against him by twisting his remarks on global warming. Fine, no surprise here. I am interested in seeing how effectively Santorum responds. Since he does not have a lot of money for ads he will have to respond publicly. This is a good test. I wish him well.

I want a science class supported by evidence from the scientific community.

So you'd be OK with textbooks containing evidence from scientists with a creationist assumptions instead of materialist assumptions? Or does the definition of "scientific community" inherently contain the non-scientific logial fallacy of begging the question and define itself as exclusionary of evidence of a created world instead of a accidental materialist world?

If you haven't studied the evidence from scientists of both assumptions, you're arguing based on ignorance.
