Throttling unlimited data plans is pointless, study finds

AT&T’s questionable policy with regard to unlimited smartphone data plan holders recently found its way back into the limelight following a new wave of subscriber complaints. The nation’s No.2 carrier no longer offers an unlimited data plan to smartphone users, though many subscribers on its network still have grandfathered plans that provide an unlimited amount of smartphone data each month.

Subscribers who approach the top 5% of unlimited data users in a single billing period see their data speeds throttled, however, and countless users have found that AT&T is now beginning to throttle users after less than 2GB of data usage in a billing period. According to a new study, subscribers are right to be furious at AT&T because throttling does nothing to alleviate network bandwidth issues. Read on for more.

Just cut ATT phone service. Got tired of all the extra charges from 3rd party services that were never authorized. Will soon get rid of their internet service.

It’s pathetic that not one carrier service offers true unlimited internet any more. The ones that claim to do have some hidden restriction or the other.

How much internet is 2gb per month? I need a new company and plan. I have an old plan that does not include data and I am clueless about how much 2gb is. I know that I put that much on my harddrive in a month, but that is from saving pictures.

Can anyone explain data usage in simple terms for me?

I have a 2GB per month (30 days) data plan for my iPad and I seldom use more than half of it.

I have 2 GB per month with Verizon and have never gone over. I use my smart phone freely, looking for information online, directions, places to go or eat, hours businesses etc. when I’m out doing things but I do not download music or videos on my phone. I also get email from 2 accounts on there with no problems.

Hope that gives you an idea of what you’ll use.

Clear still offers an unlimited wireless plan. I just signed up. I’m dumping my Sprint mifi device. Sprint took my formerly unlimited plan and slapped a 5Gb limit on it without notice and without telling me until -after- I got the january bill.

I’m really peeved at sprint. People should avoid them like the plague.

I know that Clear is majority owned by sprint... but for now they’re the only game in town. And they’re cheaper than sprint was.

Can you tell me which plan it is on Clear that offers unlimited internet over a MiFi device?

If you’re streaming high def video, a 45 minute show (a 1 hour show minus commercials...) is roughly 1.5GB - if one uses wifi on the smartphone wherever possible, the majority of typical users will be hard pressed to blow through 2GB in a month. One would have to make heavy use of their cellular data, and media intensive web sites and/or streaming media to blow trough 2gigs.

2GB will get you 4 to 5 hours of video.

I got the $50/mo plan. Unlimited data and no bandwidth throttle. (so far, anyway...)

I was spending all day on the thing... probably 16ish hours. I'd watch the occasional youtube, but mostly I'm doing e-mail, on FR and other forums, and reading news and technical articles. I'm at about 10 or 12Gb a month.

I’m sure the wireless company could let you know. I just know I’ve never gone over because I’ve never had extra charges.

If you're with AT&T, you can text a code to a certain number and instantly receive a reply with your current monthly usage totals.

Details.

What I like about Verizon is that it will look for a wireless connection before using the data plan.

Get off FR? FR is far more interesting than most flicks.
