To Irish Eyes, an Error in the "O’Bama" Campaign

The e-mail from the Obama campaign found the right target: Dave Hunt, lifelong Democrat from Upper Manhattan and owner of an Irish saloon, had contributed to President Obama’s 2008 victory drive.

Now, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, barackobama.com was peddling “O’Bama” T-shirts, playing on the president’s wee trace of Irish blood and his joke on a visit to Ireland last year that he had “come home to find the apostrophe that we lost somewhere along the way.”

But Mr. Hunt, an owner of Coogan’s in Washington Heights, noted something wrong with the message on the T-shirt itself: below the “O’Bama” was a large four-leaf clover. The shamrock, symbol of Ireland, is a three-leaf clover.

Yet another example of how the President and his gaggle of doofuses will get a pass for their ethnic incompetence, while condemning any transgressions against "favored", mascot groups.

Clearly, co-opting Irish cultural nationalism by misuse of the apostrophe, the shamrock, and even the color green for a cheesy reelection bid, shows gross stupidity. It is obvious that Obama, et al, have no clue about historical repression of Irish surnames, prohibition of Catholicism, or that people were hanged for merely wearing green.

As for putting four-leaf-clovers on beer glasses, how about a consideration of these other "thoughtful" Obama 2012 souvenir items reflecting ethnic stereotypes:

For Martin Luther King Jr. birthday- A t-shirt with Dr. King's image eating a slice of watermelon; Plastic KFC chicken buckets displaying "I had a dream about drumsticks!"

For Yom Kippur: Propeller topped yarmulkes emblazoned with "The Spin Starts Here!" Piggy Banks embossed with a Star of David and "Pork is Kosher so Long as It Holds Cash!"

For Chinese New Year...well, you get the idea.

Another thought occurred to me this morning. The anti-Christian groups are indeed fortunate. It is not without the realm of possibility that they’ll push a little too hard and that we’ll need to defend ourselves and quash the pesty little bugs.
