Romney speech falls flat in Detroit

Mitt Romney spoke to several empty seats Friday in Detroit, in a speech that offered Democrats more fodder for their attacks and failed to deliver the major economic address his campaign promised.

Television cameras showed rows of empty chairs as Romney rehashed many of the policies and quips he'd used in previous speeches, made a few jokes that appeared to fall flat with the audience and said that his wife, Ann, drives "a couple of Cadillacs," which will likely give Democrats more ammunition for their depiction of him as rich and out of touch.

The former Massachusetts governor also repeated a line that has been the butt of jokes by late-night comedians — that Michigan has good-sized trees.

“This feels good, being back in Michigan,” he said. “The trees are the right height. The streets are just right.”The former Massachusetts governor also repeated a line that has been the butt of jokes by late-night comedians — that Michigan has good-sized trees.

Detroit doesn’t have a lot of Muslims outside of some of the NOI types. It’s 85% black. Now I bet they don’t like Romney there, but they’re just going to ignore him and vote D since they always do.

Romney opened himself up to derision for choosing a 70,000-seat stadium which attracted just over 1,000 people, many of them school children bussed in to help fill out the crowd, tucked into a corner of the astro-turf pitch.

When did becoming a Rick fan become “cool”?

It’s the Sweater Vest isn’t it?
Come on, you can tell us, we’re all friends here.

I’ll bet if Rick starts wearing Argyle Socks he will be “awesomely cool”, huh?

LOL

(facepalm)

Why the hell would I try and fill up Ford Field if I'm a political candidate? The only time you get 70,000+ is at the RNC/DNC convention or on election day at the homer speech.

Any pictures of the parking lot?

That might be even funnier.

Yes. Some of us up here in the cold part of the country wear them i.e.; ME. I never thought they were nothing more than winter wear until you folks called us out on them. It is a great way to get your tie to pop with a spread collar shirt though adding a nice Brooks Brothers jacket is a nice touch. You understand that people that live in cold climes wear hip clothing to deal with it without thinking about it, don't you?

That sparsely-populated stadium still has more white people in it than Detroit has seen in a long time.

I don’t know what Romney was thinking - it looks like the attendance at an MLS soccer game (and just as dull).

He must have bussed in every mormon in Michigan to get that many.

I'm in Southern California so the closest we get to a Sweater Vest is when we visit my 80 year old Father In Law.

I've known him over 30 years and I swear he is still wearing the same Sweater Vest he wore the first day I met him. It must be one of those Kevlar ones.

I'm a Newt guy myself, but if Santorum makes it to the high award platform he has my Vote. Sweater Vest or Brook Brothers, doesn't matter to me.

Aye, I forgot about that - they still draw well. I live between where the NJ Devils used to play (the NJ Meadowlands, where they had a hard time drawing fans) and where they now play (Newark NJ, where they can’t give tickets away), and you’d never know we had a pro hockey team so close by. Here in NJ pro hockey just isn’t that popular in comparison to other sports; when the NY Rangers won the Stanley Cup they had an NYC ticker-tape parade, while the NJ Devils had a parade around their parking lot in the Meadowlands when they won. I couldn’t imagine such an event in Newark; it is just an unsafe toilet within walking distance of too many people with nothing to lose who hate you for being white.

I just don’t see busting a guy on what he wears. Live in Pennsylvania during the winter. It is standard operating procedure to wear one if you are a coat and tie guy which I am. Check us out during the summer where some stooges wear short sleeve shirts and a tie. I am a French Cuff guy so that is not a good thing.

To be fair, which I hate to be with this one, the Detroit Economic Club chose the venue...not Mittens.

What a stupid decision for them to make, and what a stupid decision for Mitten’s campaign to allow it.

The entire event was tone deaf and optically challenged.
