Many Pennsylvanians think the former senator's beliefs are too extreme for the presidency.
WASHINGTON Rick Santorum may be a mystery, a bit of an anomaly, to most American voters, but Pennsylvanians have known him a long time. And six years ago they overwhelmingly chose to sever ties.
Now Santorum has re-emerged as a serious contender in the Republican presidential primary, and Pennsylvania voters have mixed feelings about his return. At best, most find him honest about his beliefs. At worst, half say those beliefs are too extreme for the presidency.
Just 13 percent feel strongly that Santorum could beat President Barack Obama in the general election, compared with 45 percent who feel strongly that he cannot, according to a new Morning Call/Muhlenberg College poll of Pennsylvania voters.
The poll surveyed 625 registered Pennsylvania voters from Feb. 15 to Feb. 21 and has a 4 point margin of error.
One respondent, Mary Ellen Brimmer, 73, of New Holland, Lancaster County, said she's hoping Santorum does not win the nomination. Not because she has any vivid memories of his time as senator or because she doesn't share his views, but because he couldn't win the grand prize.
"I know Obama will just run away with him and I hope Obama will be finished," Brimmer, a Republican, said. "They'll clean up the floor with him. I just don't think he's capable."

He is also within 4 points in MI. Where is Newton in this thing?
Romney Voters say Santorum can't beat Obama
Excellent. When GA secedes from the union, Newton can be their new President. Is he bothering to fight in any important contests besides GA?
Are you a resident of the Allentown Bethlehem and Easton area? Let me know. We can head down to the Cosmo for drinks. You buy the first round.
My hubby's work associates in Pa., are saying the same thing to him. My high school friend called me the other day. I ask her about Rick(what do you see there in Pa.), she was saying it was crazy/noone sees it as a ground swell.
Newt left MI all for Ricky to play with Mittens.
I'll wager you that Mittens beats Ricky by more than 4% in Michigan. I'm giving you a plus 4. Just a friendly $20 bet. Loser pays FR. How about it?
No, I’m about 1,700 miles away.
There. Fixed it.
I wonder what Rick will do in the general when the Obamamedia controls the narrative and it is birth control and Satan 24 hours a day
He will win. What do you thing he will do?
Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas comes to mind. South will rise with Newt. :-)
I hope he rises to the occasion better than he did during the Arizona debate
I did not have to read that...I was there. Carter at one point had close to a 30 point lead in some of the polls
"Mr. Santorum [now leads] former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 45 percent to 16 percent. The other two candidates are in single digits: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich comes it at 9 percent and Ron Paul at 7 percent."
"President Barack Obama leads his potential GOP challengers in Pennsylvania, holding an 8% advantage over both Mr. Santorum and Mr. Romney."
Many Pennsylvanians think the former senator’s beliefs are too extreme for the presidency
But Obamas beliefs in socialism, the Constitution is something to get around and asskissing of muslims that are killing us is okay???
ZZZZ. ZZZZZ. ZZZZZ.
Neither Rick nor Mitt can beat Obama.
Only NEWT can, not only to beat Obama, but also turn his empty suit in a heap of throw-away rags. Newt last evening’s biting analysis of Obama’s energy speech in Florida was devastating.
VOTE NEWT-ON !
I can’t understand how some conservatives are for Santorum. I mean if ur intelligent enough to size up the leftists n see through them how can u not determine that Sanborem is infinitely weaker in every way to Newt? It’s so very easy to recognize the difference between them to me. How can some ppl be as stubborn as a dem and not see it??
Newt, like no other, has the ability to expose Obama for the fascist snake-oil salesman that he is, but the country will not give him the opportunity, IMO. Romney is Obama-lite. That leaves Santorum, who always manages to do far better than anyone ever expects he can.
My post was not an endorsement for Santorum, but to give another side to what appears to be a misleading poll.
“Only NEWT can, not only to beat Obama, but also turn his empty suit in a heap of throw-away rags. Newt last evenings biting analysis of Obamas energy speech in Florida was devastating.”
BURLINGAME, Calif - Newt Gingrich laid out his vision for energy production in America and picked apart the speech President Barack Obama gave on the subject earlier this week.
“We have more than enough energy in the United States that we do not have to rely on foreign countries, but we have an anti-American energy government, an anti-American energy bureaucracy, anti-American energy regulations.
The long-term answer is Americans producing their own energy. We can be the largest oil producer in the world by the end of this decade.
Obamas speech at the University of Miami was factually false, intellectually incoherent, deeply conflicted on policy and in some places just strange.
Approving the Keystone Pipeline, which Obama vetoed last month, approving a return to drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, and approving drilling in areas of Alaska, would provide 2.3 million barrels a day of additional energy.
If you would like to have a national American energy policy, never again bow to a Saudi king and pay $2.50 a gallon, Newt Gingrich will be your candidate. If you want $10 a gallon gasoline, an anti-energy secretary (Steven Chu), and in weakness requiring us to depend on foreigners for our energy, Barack Obama should be your candidate.”
