What We Learned (Arizona)
The Hotline ^ | February 25, 2012

The White House continues to talk about its ability to contest Arizona, but polling data suggest otherwise -- and underscores the fact that immigration right now is a losing issue for President Obama and Democrats. A NBC News/Marist poll in the state showed over two times as many voters in Arizona were "more likely" to support a candidate that backed the state's hardline anti-illegal immigration law as those who would be less likely to do so. While the Hispanic growth in the state is significant, the percentage of those who are registered is relatively low - and there have been few signs of any significant uptick in political participation.

The numbers also provide a cautionary tale to the party's likely Senate nominee, Richard Carmona, who is an attractive recruit because of his Hispanic heritage, but could lose support from white voters over his opposition to SB 1070. Remember: the law was the driving force behind Gov. Jan Brewer's political success - she looked like a sure loser after ascending to the post, but ended up winning election comfortably by a 12-point margin. There was a good reason why Janet Napolitano didn't run for Senate -- her involvement in the White House's lawsuit against the state immigration law would have handicapped her campaign from the start.

While the Hispanic growth in the state is significant, the percentage of those who are registered is relatively low - and there have been few signs of any significant uptick in political participation...It's demeaning in the extreme to assume that Hispanics are so shallow that their votes will be decided by the race of those for whom they vote rather than the issues and values those candidates represent - in fact all minorities should be insulted by anyone claiming they vote only for their fellow minorities......

Blacks vote in the very manner in which you are offended. It is not a strtech to at least consider that Hispanics would do the same thing. The comparison ends there. Hispanics are a very hard working bunch and are very faith driven and are suspicious of government. They come from a country, Mexico, that has screwed them into the ground over and over again. Hispanics have a much different heritage than blacks. Most likely, liberals want to assume that Hispanics will vote like blacks for their own benefit and that is why the comparison is made.

A lot of the AZ hispanics have been here for many generations and do not like the illegal immigrants giving them a bad reputation.

It was similar in CA when Prop 187 was voted on, IIRC a majority of the voting (mostly legal) hispanics actually supported it.
