Poll: 75 percent of Americans think wealthy should pay 30 percent or less in taxes

A new poll suggests that Warren Buffett's call for high-income Americans to pay more in taxes may not have the backing that the investment mogul believes.

The Hill newspaper interviewed 1,000 likely voters and results released Monday show 75 percent of them think the "most appropriate top tax rate for families earning $250,000 or more" is 30 percent or less.

Currently, upper income Americans pay a 35 percent rate, and President Obama and several Democrats in Congress want to raise that rate to nearly 40 percent next year.

No one should ever pay any income tax at all. The miniscule Constitutional Government, should be entirely funded through tiny used fees for it’s services, and relatively small duties placed on imports and exports. Shrink government to Constitutional proportions, not raise the racketeering to profitablity. Foreigners have largely quit buying our debt. Not the Fed is printing money to keep up spending. The collapse in the house of cards is accelerating. Best to get readyfor it, now.

You have a very valid point because since 50% pay NO taxes then a real fair tax for all is 0% but I won’t look for it anytime soon.

Ah, yes, those “greedy, selfish, moneygrubbing, uncaring” denizens of the “1%” who rake in more than $250,000 in income.
Has the “Occupiers” and “Fairsharers” ever, ever critized the mega MILLION amounts paid to Rock Star, Actors, Actresse with plastic (you know),political insiders and cronies, football players, baseball and basketball players, tort lawyers, and assorted liberals? I musn’t ommit Union leaders, and College/University officialdom.
If they have, I must have missed it
Apparently it is only business people, doctors and those in the medical fields, industrialists, and conservatives in general.
In other words, “I demand my rights to what YOU have.”

How many of the actually really absolutely “wealthy” pay even close to 30% of their income in taxes?

Romney admitted he paid ‘around’ 15%.

Kerry paid less than 3% on millions of income back when he was running for President.

30% to 35% would be a good start.

A lot of us working schlubs have to pay well over 30% to make up for people like Romney and Kerry paying 15% and 3%.

I agree with you in spirit, but would make one point. The “50% pay no taxes” is hogwash. Now, 50% of people may pay no Federal Income tax, and in fact receive a tax credit, but that doesn’t mean they don’t pay taxes. There’s probably a limited number of people that do get back more than they paid in all other taxes (gas tax, phone taxes, etc. etc.) combined, but I remember reading a few years back that after all levels are accounted for, the average (I believe median was used in the study, but it could have been the mean) person paid roughly 46% of all their income in taxes at some level. And that’s not to mention the hidden inflation tax, as our Government’s debt spending, causes the Fed to print money, thereby robbing (taxing) purchasing power.

Still, having said that. I agree with you completely on what your point was, and that is that there’s a real disparity in who pays for what. The politicians rob the middle class and pay of the elite (with sweetheart deals, subsidies, and bailouts), and pay of the welfare class (in exchange for their freedom). So those on both ends of the spectrum are playing against the ever shrinking middle. Government self preservation requires that all people by on the dole (whether through the bailouts, etc. or through welfare), which we all know, never lasts.

The true Fair Tax would be 0%, but I know we’ll never see that, too. Here’s my feeling: I don’t think God will let the con go on forever. It’s just my gut instinct, but the Founders were inspired, and I think that the U.S./”America” is special. America was founded upon the principles of Freedom, and even though I believe that God allows us to make mistakes and reap what we sow, I also know that He won’t be mocked. This level of corruption has never before awashed the Earth. But I know that good things are in store, because God loves us and wants us to be free. Sometimes He makes miracles happen for the righteous’ sake, even if a lot of people are bad. That’s my hope, belief/faith, but I may be getting off on a tangent.

In any event, I don’t need 0% in taxes (0% income tax sure!), but it should be so small and with such a huge rate of return for what I pay, and a necessity for our security and liberty, that I gladly pay for it. That’s my take.

would that 46% also include the corporate taxes imbedded in the prices of everything we buy?

That would turn into a situation where everybody suddenly got a check from the government. Marginalizing people isn’t the answer. Getting rid of the socialism is.

That can happen essentially one of 3 ways:

1) Civil War
2) Producers “Going Galt”
3) Collapse because we run out of money

I’m not willing to say people can’t vote. I think that’s misguided. The problem isn’t with people voting themselves goodies, it’s with cradle to grave indoctrination via public education and mass media. The solution to one form of tyranny isn’t another. The pendulum ALWAYS swings back. The solution is individual freedom and limited Government. Not more special classes and inhibited classes. I know it’s not the popular or feel good view, but it’s the truth.

I believe so, but am not sure. I can’t remember exactly which foundation it was from, but it was a big name one like Cato or Heritage. Essentially they added up all of the different taxes we pay at all levels of Government and compared it to Soviet Russia, Communist China and host of other nations today. We were I believe #1 or #2 in taxes of all the data they could compile. Soviet Russia was just under us at something like 39% or so. I’m going off memory, so I’ll have to find that article, but it seems like it was 4 or so years ago, probably about when I made an FR account (I lurked before that). It could have been the foundation that Skousen set up, but I think it was Heritage. I’ll see what I can find.

LOL, sad, but true. I have to remind myself of 2 things. “Freedom isn’t free” and that the Founding Fathers warned us ina variety of different ways/quotes, that enslavement is never more than a generation away, each generation must fight for its freedom, and that the tree of liberty must be refreshed.

Ironically, I think all 3 will happen, but in reverse order. We run out of money, the last of the producers goes Galt, and people fight over the remaining wasteland. I hope and pray to God we can find a way out of this, but I also know this problem isn’t new. We’ve seen civilizations go throught these exact issues countless times in history.

In fact, you probably know them, but here’s two more quotes:

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.” -Attributed to Alexandter Fraser Tytler

“Such democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.” -James Madison, The Federalist #10

What does Warren Buffet care? He lives off the company benefits and takes a $100k salary. HE is gaming the system to pay less taxes!
