No, we don’t have all of the story, but there are more than enough idiots and jerks out there that this could easily be true.

Lord knows I know enough people that I won’t go have dinner with because they treat the waitstaff like garbage and then leave little or no tips. And many of these carry minister credentials.

The American restaurant system is set up so that tips comprise the bulk of a server's income. One may not agree with that, one may not like it, but that's the way it has been set up.

If a person doesn't like to tip or believe in tipping, then he needs to stay at home and cook his own food or go to a fast-food restaurant where tipping is not expected.

Tipping servers in America is part of life. If one gets good service, he leaves a large tip. If he gets poor service, he leaves a small tip, but if he is one of those folks who goes out to eat and doesn't tip as a rule, then he deserve to have his food spat on and really poor service.

Waiting tables is a really tough job and those I know who are successful do so diligently--yet even they meet the occasional self-justifying idiot.

As for the OP, this guy may indeed be a jerk and one of those idiots who thinks it's funny to leave a 1% tip, but I suspect this server, who got the tip and the message, received both because of perceived poor service.

When I used to travel a lot, I went out to eat with a group of co-workers almost every night. I was appalled at the attitudes that some had on tipping. We had one guy who used to take the money and then pay with a credit card--leaving virtually no tip and pocketing the excess. There's no accounting for breeding, or class.
