Federal Tax
Gasoline = 18.4¢/gal
Diesel = 24.4¢/gal

Average State taxes (on top of Federal)
Gasoline = 22.68¢/gal
Diesel = 23.18¢/gal

How much tax do we pay on a gallon of gasoline and diesel fuel? (Energy Information Administration)

For a breakdown of costs by state:

Note: Some states now have added percentage tax in addition to tax per gallon. The percentage tax automatically rises with the price per gallon. Therefore it is important to know when the data you look at was updated.

Thanks! I live in Texas, so my per gallon of gasoline “pain at the pump” is 20 cents.

Back in the 1990’s, Zipper-Boy Clinton added a Federal 5 cents a gallon to our “pain at the pump.”

Either Florida never got the news, or (GASP!) the politicians juggled the figures, as your hotlink shows that Florida is only paying 4 cents a gallon of pure Federal Pain.
