Romney Holds off Santorum, Wins Michigan Primary By Michael O'Brien
. -- Mitt Romney won the Michigan Republican primary on Tuesday, staving off Rick Santorum in the state where Romney was born and raised and avoiding an embarrassing setback for his campaign.
NBC News projected that Romney would win the Michigan primary, along with another primary that took place on Tuesday in Arizona. The crowd here at the Suburban Collection Showplace in suburban Detroit burst into cheers as cable news on projection screens reflected the projection in Michigan.
Mitt Romney won the Michigan Republican primary on Tuesday, a victory that carried symbolic importance after the contest had transformed into a key test of his strength as the campaign's frontrunner.
Romney's victory in Michigan carries symbolic importance after the contest had been transformed into a key test of his strength as the campaign's frontrunner. The results follow a tumultuous three weeks that had both candidates fighting for momentum in the Republican nomination contest. Most of the attention was focused on Michigan, where the results could prove to be a turning point in the race.
Romney romps among nearly all groups in Arizona primary In Michigan, the state where Romney was born and raised and where his father served as governor, the on-again, off-again front-runner had to wage a tougher-than-expected campaign to avoid an embarrassing loss to Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator.

Not winner takes all, is it?
Oh, and I forgot...CRAP!!!
This is exactly what happens when marginal candidates in a race like Gingrich in MI can wreak havoc and give us Romney.
Only in AZ but not in MI
So Newt gets 7%. Gingrich didn’t politic in Michigan. He left it all for Ricky to play with Mittens.
Yep, saw that coming.
One Freaking debate caused this? The stuplification of the American Idol generation.
This country is so screwed.
Saving grace is Santorum will still get about 11-13 delegates.
How can you blame Newts 7% for Romneys win?
Why not blame Pauls 15% or the open primary?
Marginal? That’s cute.
Gingrich had no business being in this race. Romney should have been frank and thanked Gingrich profusely. Now Romney gets the big headlines of the night, a big bump, momentum, and now have it all wrapped up by Super Tuesday.
Get out Newt! Please!
Take away the Dem votes for Santorum, and Romney gets a few more percentage points in reality...
Santorum really not as close a 3%, imo.
Paul supporters are libertarian nut-heads. Mostly it is males who vote for Gingrich and Santorum. If Gingrich pulled out of MI, Santorum would likely have made the biggest upset of this race, it would have been seismic.
Even Super Tues may not push this thing over the proverbial hump.
I think like 67% of the overall delegates remain after Super Tues.
This election cycle has become a fiasco.
I am no Paul supporter, but yo can hardly blame Newt.
I think a lot of the reason Rick polled well is that he courted big labor Dems, and tonight after the win he is talking of taking away the stuff they care about.
Rick is playing with fire IMHO
Evangelicals always go for Santorum, I wonder why Catholics don’t like Santorum.
Gingrich is the only one of the four qualified to be POTUS. Gee, they repeat and take as their own just about every idea he has.
Of course the only guy actually talking about issues should leave so that we can vote between two vapid empty suits?
Too many socially liberal Catholics.
Romney won this state handily 4 years ago. This is hardly a win for Romney. This was his home state for gosh sake. He should have had a cake walk tonight in Michigan.
Arizona is “winner-take-all”; Michigan delegates are awarded proportionately.
Santorum will do just fine with Roman Catholics in Pennsylvania and Ohio, as well as Oklahoma and Texas where it is the majority religion in those states. The fact he doesn’t do well with Californians, New Yorkers or Vermonters who call themselves Catholic has to do with lack of belief. Keep in mind, Andrew Cuomo, who awakens every morning next to his whore in the is supposedly counted as a Roman Catholic.
I’m Catholic and I like Santorum. I also like Gingrich, but their religion has nothing to do with it.
If we could go toe-to-toe with Romney in negative ads, he’d be eating the crap sandwich he so richly deserves.
Yes, but there is a better scenario: If either Newt or Rick would bow out gracefully, NOW, Romney would NOT win another Primary. Together, they always poll more than RINO-Rom. But, they keep dividing the vote and Romney keeps winning by a plurality. It is what it is.
That’s exactly right. Catholics that are liberals are liberals first. Excellent point made. And it isn’t over by a long shot yet.
It's getting really out of hand, especially with Santorum... Newt has spent his life developing and enhancing and expressing his ideas and solutions, and to the other two, they are just talking points... It really is unseemly, especially for the principled, moral Christian candidate...
But the guy talking about the issues is unelectable. Period.
The religion of the voters is a strong determinate of how they vote.
Santorum seems to always lose the Catholic voter, even when he was removed as a Pennsylvania Senator he won the White Evangelical voter by 71% and only won 42% of the White Catholics, he won the Evangelical vote in Arizona also it looks like.
I know that women don’t like him, but I cannot figure out why Catholics vote against him, do you have any ideas?
Newt (and Paul) didn’t even campaign in MI. Face the facts your little Ricky can’t close the deal with the voters. The only thing he has won so far are 3 states were Newt didn’t compete and in which he got no committed delegates and a caucus state where only about 10% of the GOP voters even vote. He pleaded in robocalls for Democrats to crossover and vote for him to defeat Romney and it wasn’t enough. He lost Catholics in both states for G*d sakes. Get used to the sight of Saint Rick going down to defeat. I expect that the more people learn about Santorum the less they will like him. The people aren’t choosing a parish priest they are picking a presidential nominee and they have figured out that Ricky ain’t it. Hopefully after ST it will be Newt and Mitt one on one.
As long as too many on our side arent interested in serious issues instead of trying to vote for their own version of Romney, you will get unelectable in the fall.
As is the sanctimonious twit Saint Rick.
Santorum’s makes Catholics feel guilty. The majority of Catholics we know are pro choice, pro chemical contraception, and pro stuff.
The only thing he has won so far are 3 states
Actually he won 4 states. At least get the facts straight.
Because he reminds them of the self important head altar boy and teacher’s pet they had to deal with when the were in St. Whatever elementary school. I spent 8 years in Catholic school and had to deal with a lot of Rick Santorums over those 8 years. Every time he starts on one of his little “I am a better person than you” rants it makes me, to use Ricks’s words” want to vomit.
True and other than Iowa he got no committed delegates from any of his big wins. Wow I’m impressed.
You can hope all you want but this is a 2-man race and Gingrich can continue to play the role of spoiler. We saw how Ross Perot ended up giving us the Clintons. Santorum appeals to the blue-collar vote or the Reagan-Democrats which is a crucial voting bloc to regain the rust-belt states. He is leading in OH and PA and was leading in MI and scored a trifecta. When Romney won NH with mainly Democratic and Independent votes, no one complained.
“if 10% of the voters in the primary were Democrats, and if 80% of them voted for Santoruma conservative estimateit added 6% to his total.”
Seems like a fair estimate to me. Romney likely actually won about 41 to 32.
“Arizona claims that its primary is winner take all, but it isnt. As we have noted before, the Republican Partys rules clearly provide that any state that holds its primary before April 1 must award delegates on a proportional basis.”
Not sure how ripping into fellow Conservatives is going to get them to vote for your candidate?
Tell them not me,,all night long,,they put down Rick.Newt doesnt even bother to try in most states and they still say he will win?
Nonsense. Please don't parrot such propaganda.
Just check the polls: Unbridgeable gender gap, a massive chasm with independents, and negatives that fall through the cellar. This is the reality, like it or not.
Like I said, please don't parrot such propaganda. Rumors of Newt's non-viability are greatly exaggerated.
So if Newt had dropped out, his 7% would likely have gone to Santorum and Santorum would have won Michigan.
Newt is the ONLY ONE who will stand up to the press. THEY HATE him. That’s why he doesn’t get much coverage. I am NOT voting for either Santorum OR ROMNEY! They both try to ACT tough but they come across as phonies to me. Since we all know that the GOP candidate will be Romney, thanks to all his money, let’s focus on keeping the House and gaining the Senate.
I'm sure little Ricky will be trying to excuse this stupid move, as will his worshipers, but the rest of the primary will not go so well for him. There are some very shocked voters out there that are very angry with his pandering ways to the Democrats and willful betrayal of everything he claims to be.
This is one of the reasons things are going to turn out badly for conservatives in the general election.
I am do done with Rush, that I will never listed to his arrogant, self centered program again. His ratings are also starting to tank as a result of the revealing things he has done this election. Sanpander is right there with him. Levin is even shocked at what Santorum did.
