Violent Afghan protests over the burning of Qurans have strengthened the hand of those in Washington who argue for a faster reduction of U.S. troops. Especially galling was an incident of violence within Afghanistan's Interior Ministry, in which a disaffected driver shot and killed two American advisers.
Many Americans seem to be saying that if the Afghan people don't want us there, why should we stay? That's dubious logic because we are not in Afghanistan as a favor to the Afghan people. We are there to protect our own self-interest in not having their territory once again become a haven for al Qaeda.

Das Boot!
No hearts and minds for me today, thanks.
Isn’t it cheaper to come into the country and bomb the crap out of them once every decade like we did in 2001? It got Al Queda to run for the hills. Even 13th century backwards jackasses remember a beatdown so isn’t that the more productive solution?
Just askin’
I’m just interested in giving Afghans open minds.
Fear. Hajis are cowards. Practically every one of them owns a weapon, but they cower before bullies instead of taking out the trash. F 'em.
No, not "disaffected". How about "deranged American hating Islamist jihadi"?
And he shot them in the back of the head, execution-style.
Yes, the Afghanis DO hate us and the feeling is MUTUAL.
Our elitists don’t respect American life and treasure from election to election. We elected a radical leftists who despises America and our constitution.
Going to war so they can fail at social engineering Muslims and kill our soldiers with preferences for Muslims in combat, is out of the question now as far as I am concerned.
We are not in Kansas anymore in this country. Americans being sacrificed on the alter of political correctness and globalism, is not acceptable.
Considering we can't even keep illegals out of Arizona, that would seem to be the ultimate fool's errand.
Frankly, Afghanistan is a great place to isolate Al Qaeda and its misguided adherents. It's landlocked, has little infrastructure, and is surrounded by unpleasant neighbors. I say let them flock there - and blow up a camp from afar once in a while if they start getting uppity. :)
Right on.
Forget the carrot, bring the stick.
Big stick.
Unfortunately for us Infidels, especially the European Infidels, Egypt and Libya are now available for the Jihadists.-tom
Hearts and minds is the perfect solution. Put the hearts in one pile, minds in the other :)
Re: Im just interested in giving Afghans open minds.
Kinda reminds me of a would be suicide bomber I saw in Iraq that had his brains blown out by a sniper
An acquaintance of mine who has spent time with the Afghans describes them as some of the most simple-minded people he’s ever met. As easy to whip up into a frenzy over bogus stories as your typical bunch of third graders.
We tried that too in Vietnam. It didn’t work there either.
It would be cheaper to bomb & mine all the mountain passes to pakistan, let them stew in their own hatred and take out their leadership every 3 years or so. Keep them in a perpetual state of civil war until even those medieval scum are sick of the killing.
“We are there to protect our own self-interest in not having their territory once again become a haven for al Qaeda.”
If that is so, we should adapt a policy of scheduled preventative maintenance: nuke the place every five years to keep it uninhabitable.
