NORTH OF WESLACO Armed robbers shot a 71-year-old man Sunday at his grocery store, but he didnt go down without a fight.
After feeling the impact, he grabbed his .380-caliber handgun from under the counter and fired on his assailants, authorities said. He may have put one in the hospital.
Hidalgo County sheriffs deputies responded to Perez Grocery Store near Mile 6 ½ West and Mile 7 North about 9:45 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Sheriffs Office. There, they found a wounded Carmen Polanco Perez, who told investigators that two gun-toting, Hispanic men had come into his store demanding money.
During the robbery, Perez felt an impact to his chest, deputies said. So he grabbed his gun and opened fire. Medics later determined the impact Perez felt was caused by a shotgun blast.
The robbers fled the area and emergency personnel transported Perez to Knapp Medical Center, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.
Moments later, a second man with a gunshot wound arrived at the same hospital. Authorities did not release the mans identity, but said he underwent emergency surgery.
Investigators are trying to determine if he is connected to the armed robbery at Perez Grocery Store.
The hospital staff expects him to recover, officials said. He was listed in critical but stable condition Monday afternoon.
Authorities did not provide further information.
Betcha that under Obamacare this 71-year old would be denied medical attention for his gun shot wound. Too old, let him bleed out.
I love the support comments on the article from his friends and the relatives of the grandpa in that store. At least he winged one of them...
According to the gun-control lobby, he shoulda just died.
When seconds count, Police are only minutes away to take a report!
Plus, he is obviously a gun-clinger.
I would like to know the immigration status of the perps.
Maybe with a bigger caliber the perp wouldn't have made it to the hospital.
What a sad ending!
Just goes without saying, you mess with us old folks we can’t fight so we have to shoot ya.
But his assailants would be provided whatever care they needed because they had many productive years of ad hoc wealth distribution ahead of them.
