I doubt, as you are implying, that Newt's ideas are not well thought out, quite the contrary, his ideas, though I don't necessary agree with all of them, seem well thought out.

In comparison, Santorum's ideas appear stale and quite limited in nature.

Sounds like common sense to me. Course Common sense is becoming a rarity in the US of A.
