Two Chicago gun control measures advance(IL)

SPRINGFIELD — Two controversial gun control proposals advanced to the full House Wednesday.

On a partisan vote, the Democratic-controlled House Executive Committee approved a measure requiring handgun owners to register their weapons with the state.

The panel also signed off on legislation that would create a special 2 percent tax on ammunition, which would finance trauma facilities that treat gunshot victims.

Both measures headed to the floor after failing to win support from Republican committee members. They said it remains unproven that such laws will reduce crime. And, they added, downstate gun owners would be unfairly burdened with the changes.

The gun registry was proposed by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, He originally called for a $65 registration fee, but that amount was pared to $20, with the proceeds going to various crime-fighting efforts.

“This is a tool that police can use,” said state Rep. Will Davis, D-Hazel Crest, who sponsored the registry legislation.

The ammo tax pushed by state Rep. Kelly Cassidy, D-Chicago, would generate as much as $1.2 million, according to legislative estimates.

“Once again, the rest of the state is being bled for Cook County,” said Todd Vandermyde, Illinois lobbyist for the National Rifle Association. “We don’t like gun registration schemes.”

Illinois currently requires gun owners to have a firearm owners identification card. There is no state requirement for people to report the type and number of guns or ammunition they own.

State Rep. Mike Bost, R-Murphysboro, said the best way to lower crime rates would be to give Illinoisans the right to carry concealed weapons.

It appears that Rahm wants the Chicago reps to go on record as supporting this constitutionaly dubious legislation.

Mr. Will Davis is right. This is a tool that police can use. When these a-holes finally outlaw guns the police will know right where to go to confiscate them.

It is important that people know the real reason for registration.

Thanks Will Gun Grabber. I hope they remember you next election.

:: This is a tool that police can use. ::

And, here’s how it works:

Gang shoot out on the Southside. Police collect the brass for evidence and go to the registration database. They are then able to knock on every door listed that matches the caliber of the weapon and ask to inspect owners weapon.

Of course, they won’t find the one used by the Banger but they get to intimidate the lawful owner.

In Illinois? JUST DON”T REGISTER.

Oh, for goodness’ sake - if Chicago really wants to ban guns “through the back door,” it need only follow the Massachusetts precedent, and have the State Attorney General declare guns to be “unsafe.”

Presto! Guns are illegal by fiat, and no one can appeal to the state assembly, who are, in an instant, rendered utterly impotent.

It’s the Lenin Solution, made new again.

Even a Chicago judge would slap down the Chicago Police for that sort of behavior.

If a Chevy Malibu is used in a drive-by shooting, do the Chicago Police harrass the owners of every registered Malibu in Cook County?

A “Chicago Judge” just recently said that the Second Amendment is only valid inside a private citizen’s home. Care to adjust that statement?

Yeah, right.......just like tobacco lawsuit money is being used by states to finance anti-smoking ads and smoking related hospital costs.

That money has repaired a lot of state highways, given lot's of state pay raises and bought a lot of new state vehicles.

Yeppers.......check's in the mail, baby.

The Attorney General of the People’s Republic of Massachusetts is interested SOLELY in the safety of the residents here. There will soon be a general banning of other equally deadly items:
Baseball bats, pool cues, golf CLUBS, hammers, screwdrivers, frying pans, all glass bottles, automobiles, electrical cords, and the most insidious of all...the FROZEN leg of lamb.
Then truly we shall be safe and secure in our persons. /s

Nope. If Chicago police routinely roust every single Cadillac Esclade owner when an Esclade is used in a drive-by, then I will adjust my statement.
