Law enforcement wary of concealed carry bill before governor
Rapid City Journal ^ | 01 mar 2012 | David Montgomery

Local law enforcement officials are leery of a bill to allow South Dakotans to carry concealed weapons without a permit.

That measure, House Bill 1248, passed the Legislature Tuesday and awaits Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s signature or veto.

If Daugaard signs the law, many South Dakotans will bypass a layer of bureaucracy, including a background check and a small fee, before being able to carry a concealed weapon.

Anyone with a valid South Dakota driver’s license who isn’t disqualified from carrying a concealed weapon – including convicted felons, people with a “history of violence” and people with mental illness – will be able to carry a concealed weapon without the permit

They don’t care about the law and are probably carrying right now.

You're right, bad guys don't care about what the law says. If they did, they wouldn't be the bad guys.

Another angle may be: More good guys carrying guns = increase in dead bad guys and reduction in crime, resulting in reduction in head count and budget for law enforcement. Either that or some LE's don't want mere citizens exercising their 2nd Amendment rights and therefore shouldn't be wearing the badge to begin with.

Very common reaction from LEOs. They don’t want to give up the control, plain and simple. It has NOTHING to do with preventing crime because anyone with a half a brain knows that concealed carry has a strong positive correlation with reduced crime.

These days, ‘law enforcement’ doesn’t want anyone armed other than themselves. Easier to exercise their own power over every one else.

It is believed that the automotive industry is a full 10% of the American economy. I have no evidence to support it, but I would guess law enforcement is at least 5% of the economy.

Law ENFORCERS are a blight on American freedom.

And you are correct: too many in LE see themselves as special and the rest of us as “civilians” to be controlled.

By now, any LEO who doesn’t know that CC reduces crime and makes their job easier, is so out of touch that he needs a refresher course before he should be allowed to enforce the law again.

Too bad there isn’t a statistic on how many LEOs have been saved by CC.

Be interesting to know.

Gun statistics are notoriously hard to compile.

My question to these LEO’s would be when you pull over a vehicle do you or do you not consider that every time you do so the occupant(s) maybe armed and you proceed accordingly?

If you assume not then you need to be in a new line of work for your time on earth is probably very limited. If you assume yes they maybe armed and react with proper training for any traffic stop then how would this CCW policy change what you do daily?

The argument being made by the anti-gun zealots is not logical and devoid of common sense.

Given the upsurge in LEO-ish positions (i.e. TSA and such), and the economy downturn, I wouldn’t be surprised if those values were swapped: LEO = 10% and autos = 5%.
