Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- After passing in the state Senate Judiciary Committee last week and in the state Senate Finance Committee on Monday, Senate Bill 149 was passed in the West Virginia Senate unanimously today.
We expect SB 149 to soon be assigned to the state House Judiciary Committee for its consideration.
Introduced by state Senate Majority Leader John Unger (D-16), SB 149 would mandate police authorities return all seized firearms, not currently being held as evidence in a criminal investigation, to the lawful owner if able.
If the lawful owner is not found or unable to take possession of the firearm, SB 149 would require these agencies to sell these firearms at a public auction to a licensed firearms dealer.
Current West Virginia law allows for seized guns to be immediately destroyed.
SB 149 would also prevent the wasteful and expensive practice of destroying firearms that could be re-circulated through licensed dealers to the retail market. Localities would be enabled to reap the benefits of the sale proceeds and consumers would have access to affordable firearms through licensed gun dealers, with all of the usual safeguards that apply to dealer sales to the public.

It’s amazing to me that a (D) introduced this legislation. But then I guess WV is a different animal. The state is how things used to be, the Dems weren’t so bad. I noticed that Manchin (D-WV) voted FOR the Blunt amendment today. Ah, for the good ol days.
If he learned nothing else from Byrd, he learned how to count Senatorial votes.
For some reason, it particularly bothers me to see fine firearms destroyed by political hacks, or anyone else for that matter.
When I read that the British were told to just dump brand new F4U Corsairs into the ocean rather than return them to the U.S. it nearly makes my blood boil.
For that matter when I see old footage of a freighter being sunk by a U-boat, I always wonder what kind of cargo is being wasted. Are thousands of brand new jeeps, or trucks, or rifles, or beautiful Bausch & Lomb binoculars going to Davy Jones Locker?
I guess I just hate waste.
There are no Republicans in WV.
My State Senator is a Democrat. Rabidly pro gun. His brother owns a firearms dealership.
WV voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004, and against Obama in 2008.
We also have the highest per capita gun ownership of any state east of the Mississippi.

The best model 29 I ever owned was one I purchased from a dealer who got it in a lot he bought at a police auction.
The rear sight blade was broken off on the right side. I got it pretty cheap because of that. Got it repaired at a gun show by a guy selling assorted parts. He told me he could do the job right then and there if I didn’t mind his using the concrete floor for an anvil.
Every thing about it was then perfect. Barrel to cylinder gap was just about 1/1000th of an inch. All six cylinders aligned perfectly, locked up solid, it had a great single and double action pull and was well finished.
Also accurate as all get out.

You should visit WV sometime.There are 350,000 registered Republicans in our state and 250,000 no-party, up 30,000 since 2009 due to Democrats changing registration to Independent. Democrats are within 2% of 1,200,000 (or 24,000) of slipping below 50% of the electorate, which should happen with a couple of years.
Um...I live in Braxton County.
I was figuratively speaking. Of course, there are Republicans. For some reason, you just don’t see as many of them running for office.
