"Uncommitted" Dick Morris - a deadlocked convention makes the case to back Mitt Romney
Live Dash Transcript ^ | March 1, 2012 | Dick Morris on Greta Van Susteren

Posted on 03/02/2012 1:00:48 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

March 1, 2012 Livedash transcript [only place I could find it]: Dick Morris followed Greta Van Susteren's interview with Newt Gingrich -- Morris transcript begins at 00:12:28 (it's rough and Greta chimes in but it's mostly Morris). Emphasis mine.

[snip]

00:13:24 The thing that I am focused on in michigan, though, and I am very serious about it and grossly upset by it is that romney won michigan by a huge margin among the republicans and the independents.

00:13:37 It was only that 1 voter out of 10 was a democrat and the democrats voted for santorum 3-1.

00:13:45 There were 100,000 democrats who came out to the polls in michigan who backed santorum.

00:13:52 That doesn't happen just by accident that.

00:13:54 Happens because they were pulled out by the uaw and the democratic party.

00:13:58 I will tell you, greta i am not for romney and I am not for santorum and I am not for gingrich.

00:14:05 I am uncommitted.

00:14:06 But I will be darned with barack obama is going to tell me who the republican candidate ought to be.

00:14:11 If he says that he is for santorum, which is effectively what he did because he's easy to beat, I think we should all take account of that.

00:14:20 the only thing I will say in senator santorum's defense is that he got cheated in iowa.

00:14:28 He got iowa, but he didn't get to do the victory speech.

00:14:32 I guess, you know, while there may have been mischief as you suggest, democrats voting for santorum, I think it's disheartening to sort of, not a big deal, one delegate.

00:14:43 But when you work your heart out and you think you got cheated and even mike cox, a romney supporter, said he thought it wasn't fair to santorum.

00:14:53 One delegate, but it's -- you know, it's not fun.

00:14:56 >> It's a more important issue here.

00:14:59 These proportional representation primary, 54% of the delegates are chosen by proportional representation.

00:15:08 46 Are winner take all.

00:15:09 If santorum loses almost every single primary in the north, midwest and the west and gingrich and he divide up the south, which I think will probably happen, I think gingrich will win georgia and santorum will win tennessee and oklahoma and romney will win all the other states.

00:15:26 But if that happens and romney loses one or two of those northern states, this thing becomes deadlocked.

00:15:33 And we go to the convention with romney with 100 votes short, 1100 delegates and santorum 400, gingrich, 4 hundred and ron paul, 2 hundred and we have to wait for september 1 for a nominee.

00:15:47 That would be a catastrophe if he felt the best argument I have ever seen for voting for romney -- and I am because I like santorum's issue positions -- it is clear that barack obama and the democratic party are dying to run against santorum and scared to death against running against romney.

00:16:05 That's very persuasive to me.

00:16:08 is there any way that we have said the speaker of the house, newt gingrich if he wins georgia, does he have wind in his sail?

00:16:18 Is he back in the game?

00:16:20 He hasn't won since south carolina.

00:16:22 >> He is back in the game because there is a real chance of this whole thing deadlocking and becoming destructive to the republican party.

00:16:28 If he wins georgia, I think he will probably win mississippi.

00:16:32 He will probably win alabama.

00:16:34 He has a decent shot in louisiana.

00:16:36 He has south carolina.

00:16:38 He might do very well in north carolina.

00:16:41 And that might give him 300 delegates, not enough to win.

00:16:45 You need 1144.

00:16:46 But if he gets 3 hundred and paul gets 2 hundred and santorum gets 400, they could block romney from a scmairjt that could kill our chances because we will be fighting over this darn thing until september 1.

00:17:00 The convention is late this year.

00:17:03 It's august 27.

00:17:04 And if we don't get a nominee by may or june, we can kiss our chances against obama goodbye. .....

We have a write in box and it will be used if romney is the nominee... the republican party will have to be rebuilt or destroyed after this election... either way is fine with me... and as Rhett Butler said, “Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn"!

That was hysterical on Greta last night with Morris’ having to keep denying he supported Romney because he kept pushing Romney’s talking points.

I think Greta was hard pressed to keep a straight face.

Morris, the toe sucker: an obsese blowhard, Democrat, opportunist, giving new meaning to the word PLUGS.

Next time he’s on, let’s have a contest to see who can guess the number of seconds until he mentions Dickmorris.com.

Obama versus Romney = me voting for a third party.

I will not cast a vote for a liberal creep, regardless of party affiliation.

Mitt would also be twice the President the last republican president was intellectually and buisness wise.

You support the homosexual agenda, are anti-gun, pro-abortion, want liberal judges?

Sure, there’s a distinction. One is an anti-business communist big-government egotist and the other is a pro-business socialist big-government egotist.

Neither is the pro-America small-government blunt commonsense fiscal conservative FReepers should favor. That title belongs to Newt.

FOX certainly seems to like Romney but an uncertain nominee until Sept 1 maybe be trouble. Not that we're not already looking at 4 more years of Obama, baring a miracle, but a brokered convention, while fascinating from a political watching viewpoint, may not be helpful. It means Obama has that many more months to sit back and collect his billion to dump on the final challenger during a three month window.

Morris' warning is worth hearing out.
