several of these books were damaged and some had been used by prisoners to pass messages and information, so the authorities decided to discard them.

if the Koran was so "holy" to the inmates, why were they defaced in the first place by Muslims using them as message boards? (which is why they were confiscated in the first place) I guess that doesn't count?

the koran is, at best, a work of fiction. If, however, the great muslim world wants the prisoners to have a copy, they should provide it. The korans in question belonged to the U.S. and were merely loaned to the prisoners for their convenience. In no way should we have apologized for burning our own trash.
