Because they want to win the general election and Santorum \ Gingrich can’t win the general election.

GHWB won once, so that’s kind of silly. He would have won the second time if not for Perot. Again, silly comparison.

McCain didn’t lose because he was a moderate, he lost because people were tired of 8 years of GOP rule, two wars, a very bad economy. Had nothing to do with McCain’s moderate positions.

Dole, was hardly a moderate.

This is the Catholic Santorum, not Mitt Romney.

“I was basically pro-choice all my life, until I ran for Congress,” he said.

In a December 1995 Philadelphia Magazine article Santorum said as much:
Santorum does concede that he’s had a volte-face on abortion. “I was basically pro-choice all my life, until I ran for Congress,” he said. “But it had never been something I thought about.”

“So why did you change?” I asked.

“I sat down and read the literature. Scientific literature.”

“So religion had nothing to do with it?”

“Oh, well, of course,” he said, “And religion too. It was both of those, science and religion.”

You asked which states that Romney won. staytrue mentioned three states that McCain carried in 2008 and Romney won this year.

From your source:

“Abortion is such a deeply wrenching issue because it poses a conflict between essential values. The unborn child’s very life is at stake;”

Thanks for confirming that even in 1990 - Santorum believed that abortion kills an unborn child.

If this is all the evidence that you have, then I can only confirm that your claim is false. Santorum affirms the humanity of the unborn.

Well, considering as the Polls show Santorum as closer to Obama than Romney, that would be hardly the case.

No - it’s the same old conflict between the Rockefellers and the base. The base wants some red meat and the Rockefellers want to reach around the aisle.

Everytime we run conservatives we win, every time we run moderates we lose. How hard is this to get?

LOL, that Romneyesque letter you are quoting was AFTER the supposed switch for the campaign, in fact the letter was written for his campaign to start softening his pro-abortion stance.

You also left off the part you didn't want anyone to see. "Abortion is such a deeply wrenching issue because it poses a conflict between essential values. The unborn child's very life is at stake; the mother's future often hangs in the balance too, as an unwanted pregnancy can be unspeakably traumatic as well as limiting her educational, personal, and job opportunities

This is the "evidence".

Rick Santorum:“I was basically pro-choice all my life, until I ran for Congress,” he said.

Again, you are incorrect. The part that I quoted is from the letter that the article quotes dating back to 1990. Your own article confirms this to be true.

He affirms that abortion kills an unborn child. Now, for me the sanctity of life is the crucial part. I can only conclude that the headline of the above article is inaccurate and misleading.

Perhaps they hope that people will find the article, pick it up, quote it and hope that no one takes the time to examine it? Perhaps so.

Unfortunately the article does not prove the claim that you are attempting to prove, so again, unless you have further evidence, I can only regard your claim as entirely false.

I await further proof to confirm your argument.

This is bizarre, you are totally ignoring his own, firm, statement, “I was basically pro-choice all my life, until I ran for Congress,” he said..

Then you take the 1990 position letter WRITTEN FOR THAT RUN FOR CONGRESS that he wrote trying to soften his previous pro-abortion life, and you cut off the statement to leave off the part about pregnancy being a problem for women.

Here is that portion of his new campaign position for that race. "Abortion is such a deeply wrenching issue because it poses a conflict between essential values. The unborn child's very life is at stake; the mother's future often hangs in the balance too, as an unwanted pregnancy can be unspeakably traumatic as well as limiting her educational, personal, and job opportunities"

Once again:

“Abortion is such a deeply wrenching issue because it poses a conflict between essential values. The unborn child’s very life is at stake;”

He confirms the humanity of the unborn. Any objective analysis of this passage must include this portion.

You seem to be getting away from my original statement for some reason.

The statement that you didn't like was this. "Voters know almost nothing about Santorum and his Romney-like political “growth”, even his life as a pro-abortion Catholic is unknown."

Like Romney, when it came time to run for office, Santorum suddenly became less pro-abortion as his 1990 position letter shows. But this tells us where he was before he ran for office. “I was basically pro-choice all my life, until I ran for Congress,” he said.

Since the evidence you provided indicated that Santorum did and does believe in the sancitity of human life in the womb - it stands to reason that he was and is not a pro-abortion catholic.

Labelling him as such is an outright lie.

That a Gingrich supporter persists in lying about Santorum is evidence to me that some Gingrich supporters are willing to be dishonest in order to prop up their candidate.

See, we don’t need to lie to support Santorum. Why you feel the need to lie for Gingrich, is, frankly, sad. I pity you and the other Newt supporters who are engaging in these means for such an uncertain end.

Frankly - Newt isn’t worth what you are a giving up for him. After Newt is finished, you are going to have to live with what you have done, and the damage to your own trustworthyness really isn’t worth it, and will last far longer than his candidacy.

the voters of Pennsylvania knew him best and dumped him in a record breaking landslide rejection of him

And this sir is the reason you will have Romney as you candidate, so Eat Your Peas, and shut up.

MOST Republicans nationwide sat home to “teach” the Republicans a lesson.

They are fixing to get another one, but it is going to cost us the Republic this time, not just an election.

Damn them all.

Please don’t try to deny the facts. Santorum has a history and the voters have a right to know about it. Unlike the Newt-bashers, we don’t twist things and tell lies and half-truths, we simply link to the facts and original sources. These are excerpts:

http://www.phillymag.com/articles/rick_santorum_i_was_basically_pro_choice_all_my_life/

He made it through and moved to Harrisburg to work for state Senator Corman, a Republican he’d interned for in college. Corman is a moderate Republican representing the area around State College. Both he and his wife, Becky, are staunch advocates of abortion rights. Santorum worked in Corman’s office for five years, serving much of that time as his administrative assistant.

Back then, Santorum was known—like Corman—for being nonpartisan. “Rick never wore his politics on his sleeve,” says J. Barry Stout, the ranking Democrat on the Senate transportation committee. “He was a Democrat when he had to be and a Republican when he had to be. He was a good worker, but nothing special.” Republican consultant William Green, who befriended Santorum in Harrisburg, believes Santorum was politically ambivalent: “Was he impassioned? I don’t think I’d have used that word. The zealotry came about later. When he ran for Congress.”

the Republican National Committee gave no assistance, his real boost came quietly from the foot soldiers of the Christian right. This was a resource still untapped by most national-level politicians in Pennsylvania. “The Republican Party has no organization in the western part of the state,” says H. William DeWeese, minority leader of the state House. “Santorum had to mobilize someone.” And so he sent thousands of mailers to evangelicals. “Having returned to my church after a period of absence,” he wrote in one, “I now understand the connection between a personal, vibrant faith commitment and the moral fiber of our nation’s needs. While I will represent all the people of my district, I will do so in a principled fashion, derived from my religious commitment.”

“Believe it or not, he kept his views on abortion very quiet throughout the campaign,” says a prominent Republican active in Planned Parenthood. “At least he did with us. No one here had identified him as anti-choice.”

During this time, Santorum also found himself a wife. In 1988, he had met Karen Garver, a law student considering an offer for a summer associate’s job at Kirkpatrick, and they’d connected right away. Like Santorum, Karen was Catholic and from Pittsburgh. At the time, she was living with Tom Allen, a well-known OB-GYN who in 1972 had co-founded Pittsburgh’s first abortion clinic. He also happened to be the doctor who had delivered Karen and some of her siblings. She had moved in with Allen when she was a nursing student in her early 20s and he was in his 60s. Upon leaving Allen for Santorum, she told him one of her considerations was starting a family. “When Karen told me she was moving out,” Allen says, “she said, ‘You’d really like Rick. He’s a lot like you. He’s politically active and he’s pro-choice.’”

“Oh, well, of course,” he said. “And religion too. It was both of those, science and religion.”

This is getting freaky, are you drunk?

Santorum was pro-abortion until he switched in 1989 in preparation for running for political office in 1990. That is why he says “I was basically pro-choice all my life, until I ran for Congress”.

The letter you are quoting from was his CHANGED position written in 1990 for his campaign, and even that is soft.

How do you call his self description a “lie”, are you that crazy?

“I was basically pro-choice all my life, until I ran for Congress”, he said.

Santorum’s wife’s ex-boyfriend, the co-founder of Pittsburgh’s first abortion clinic, was quoted as saying that Santorum was pro-choice.

“When Karen told me she was moving out,” Allen says, “she said, ‘You’d really like Rick. He’s a lot like you. He’s politically active and he’s pro-choice.’”

Man I was pumped during the Reagan years, I loved the guy, but not everyone did, pro-abortion Romney didn’t for example, nor did pro-abortion Catholic, Santorum.

“There was a Youth for Reagan group on campus, but Rick shunned them,” remembers a friend who was active with him in the Pennsylvania College Republican organization. “He always described them as right-wing fringe.
