But they got ahold of one of the owners of that home over the phone...

**************

...got ahold of...

Typically -- a southern euphemism:

....(1) made contact (with a subject) in person, by CB radio, or netlink phone

....(2) caught said subject by the back of the belt and scruff of the neck /T-shirt inpreparation for "th'owin' their sorry @$$ outta here"...

Y'all cheeseheads & badgers have good 'un...

Some people pronounce it “aholt.”

Another midwesternism, of which I heard a lot (alot?) while growing up, is “lookit.”

I assume it’s a midwesternism, because I have never heard a non-midwesterner use it. Enlighten me if you’ve heard it used by people from other regions.

Many years later, it jumped right out at me when I first heard Rush use it.

“got ahold of” is a phrase long in common, everyday usage in this manner in Wisconsin, and in the part of Minnesota in which I also resided.
