In my county we have no less than 6 different environmentalist groups working on various means of shutting down oil and gas drilling and the feds are aiding and abetting them.

In the past western governments treated natural resources as strategic assets and quickly dealt with any persons, groups, or nations that threatened their economic well-being. If you accept the premise that nations with modern economies are energy dependent then you have to deal with any organized effort to deny energy as sedition.
