Obama agency rules Pepsi use of cells derived from aborted fetus ‘ordinary business’

LARGO, FL, March 5, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Pepsi Company, which is set to release the new product Pepsi Next in the coming weeks, is facing a more robust boycott as pro-life activists protest the company use of cells derived from an aborted fetus in flavor-enhancing research. But Pepsi has succeeded, with help from the Obama Administration, in keeping its controversial operations from consideration by its shareholders.

In a decision delivered Feb 28th, President Obama’s Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) ruled that PepsiCo’s use of cells derived from aborted fetal remains in their research and development agreement with Senomyx to produce flavor enhancers falls under “ordinary business operations.”

The letter signed by Attorney Brian Pitko of the SEC Office of Chief Counsel was sent in response to a 36-page document submitted by PepsiCo attorneys in January, 2012.  In that filing, PepsiCo pleaded with the SEC to reject the Shareholder’s Resolution filed in October 2011 that the company “adopt a corporate policy that recognizes human rights and employs ethical standards which do not involve using the remains of aborted human beings in both private and collaborative research and development agreements.”

Click “like” if you want to end abortion!

PepsiCo lead attorney George A. Schieren noted that the resolution should be excluded because it “deals with matters related to the company’s ordinary business operations” and that “certain tasks are so fundamental to run a company on a day-to-day basis that they could not be subject to stockholder oversight.”

Debi Vinnedge, Executive Director of Children of God for Life, the organization that exposed the PepsiCo-Senomyx collaboration last year was “appalled by the apathy and insensitivity” of both PepsiCo executives and the Obama administration.

“We’re not talking about what kind of pencils PepsiCo wants to use – we are talking about exploiting the remains of an aborted child for profit,” she said. “Using human embryonic kidney (HEK-293) to produce flavor enhancers for their beverages is a far cry from routine operations!”

PepsiCo also requested the resolution be excluded because it “probed too deeply into matters of a complex nature upon which shareholders cannot make an informed judgment.”

“In other words, PepsiCo thinks its stockholders are too stupid to understand what they are doing with the remains of aborted children,” Vinnedge stated. “Well they are about to find out just how smart the public really is when they turn up the heat on the world-wide boycott!”

Oklahoma Senator Ralph Shortey has proposed a bill SB1418 banning the sale of products that are developed with or contain aborted fetal remains. In the case of Pepsi products, the cells derived from the aborted fetus do not end up in the final product.

“We commend the Senator for his courageous move,” noted Vinnedge. “The public is already saying no thanks to all Pepsi beverages and Pepsi Next is just that – the “next” product to avoid!”

To date, the world-wide boycott has expanded to include Canada, Germany, Poland, UK, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand.

If Pepsi were a government entity, I would agree Pepsi should not be using material from aborted fetuses, as the government can ban its support of their use.

As a private entity,

(1) I am sure Pepsi is permitted by (not restrained by) law to use material from aborted fetuses and yet

(2) I think private citizens and their organizations and associations should protest Pepsi’s use of the material and try to create sufficient public pressure to get them to quit.

We don’t need more laws and rules, we need more citizens that don’t need more laws and rules, because G-d has written His laws on their hearts.

“Due to its previous ownership by PepsiCo, Pizza Hut, as with all Yum! Brands concepts, have a lifetime contract to sell Pepsi products. While Pizza Hut was owned by Pepsi, all three of Pizza Hut’s major competitors—Domino’s Pizza, Papa John’s Pizza, and Little Caesars—all sold Coca-Cola products”

I’ll bet these are nothing more than the HEK 293 cell line. This immortal cell line has been around for decades and came from human embryonic kidney cells transformed by means of an adenovirus back in the 1970s. It is unknown whether the cells came from a naturally aborted fetus or not. At any rate, researchers don’t obtain these cells by going down to Planned Parenthood for samples. So if this was the cell line used and folks think that drinking a Pepsi product results in more abortions to keep the product line going they couldn’t be any more mistaken.

OMG! We're already a ‘soylent green’ society.

Never, never will I drink that crap. My son-in -law, worked for them and he drank lots of it. He died from esophageal and stomach cancer abt 10 years ago in his late 40’s I believe.

You'd have to wonder what kind of person could even conceive of such a thing. The argument for so long in favor of the use of fetal tissue was the supposed life-saving treatments that would supposedly be developed for the sake of humanity.

And now we find they want to make a beverage with them.

These are people who have completely lost their moorings.

“I also believe that Pizza Hut is a Pepsi owned company. I’ll have to check.”

If memory serves me correctly, I believe that Pepsico owns, Frito-Lay, Pizza Hut, KFC, Taco-Bell and Gator-Ade.

...Just nasty what they are doing.

As I thought. Sheesh, these folks are just a bit nutty here. The HEK293 cells are standard research tools in molecular cell biology. They are not used to make flavor enhancers in the sense that anyone drinking a Pepsi is drinking aborted fetuses. When people start portraying things like this in order to sway others to support them, they're essentially lying and justifying it by saying they're doing it in a good cause--the end justifies the means. This is similar to the misuse of the statistics in breast cancer and abortion. They make it sound as though an abortion increases a woman's chance of cancer when, in actuality, it's only reducing it towards the risk run by women who have never ever been pregnant. In fact, a sufficiently large group of women having an abortion at the end of the first trimester would should a reduced risk of breast cancer when compared to a group of nulliparous women, but no one is using this as a way of saying women should have an abortion after the first trimester because that way they can reduce their risk of breast cancer without all the bother of actually having the kid.

How in the hell does THAT enhance flavor? Forget it... maybe I don't really want to know. This is one sick ****ing country.

That list is long. I’ve been able to very easily switch brands in the past but these products are going to take some serious work to ban from this house. Still, I’m printing it out and posting it on the fridge. We buy store brand Dr. Pepper for home but going out, it’ll be hard to substitute. But there’s no substitution for Funyuns. The only pizza place here in podunkville is Pizza Hut and the only taco place is Taco Bell.

Knee-jerkism is alive and well. People on this thread really need to do a bit more research before making uninformed choices based on misleading claims.

If you take that approach, every little league ball diamond that has a Pepsi sign on the outfield wall gets added to the boycott list, right?
