2 fatally shot in apparent murder-suicide at Episcopal High School; no students harmed

Two people have been fatally shot in an apparent murder-suicide at Episcopal High School in Jacksonville. No students were involved or injured. A Times-Union photographer has heard the shooting involved a maintenance man and an administrator, but that could not be confirmed.

Fire Department Spokesman Tom Francis said the call came about 1:30 p.m. at the school at 4455 Atlantic Boulevard. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is dispatching homicide detectives to the scene and a media staging area has been established.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Melissa Bujeda said the call came at 1:23 p.m. as a report of someone on campus with a firearm with shots fired. Police found two people dead.

School officials were not immediately available to comment. The Sheriff’s Office sent out an email at 2 p.m. for Episcopal parents to “respond to the normal pick up location.”

Another email from the Sheriff’s Office said, “The situation is under control. At this time there is no outstanding suspects.”

Terrible. Word is that a Spanish teacher who was fired yesterday returned today, fatally shot the headmistress, then killed himself.

I was at Fletcher for one year when my dad was stationed at Mayport. The year the plane crashed.

People in general appear to be a little too tense.

That's what my DH says. Recently our 31 year old son was on his way over to our house and some guy nearly ran him off the road after cutting in front of him. So he followed the guy for a bit, got to the point where he got in front of the guy, was able to turn around and just wanted to say something to the effect: "Hey, what's up fella...why did you treat me like that back there?"

Well, the other guy immediately held up a large can of spray and zapped our son right in the face. His eyes started burning as he raced to our house, by that time only about a mile away. He later felt so bad, felt so sick and so angry at himself for even thinking about confronting the guy, for sure as shootin', the guy could have just as easily pulled a gun on him. Our son was sickened with fear over what he had done, not for himself, but for his family's sake (wife and two little girls)...he couldn't help but think about the risk he was taking and if something fatal had happened, what it would have done to his wife and daughters. (You'd have to know our son; he's not a confrontational sort of person...he's a very amicable sort of individual, but let the slight of what happened just kind of get to him, and he made a split decision to try to talk with the guy about it, and what it got him was a spray of mace to the face.

Point is, there are a lot of tense people riding around these days. I mean, who carries around one of those large spray cans of mace...seemed like a guy just itching for a chance to zap somebody.

My younger sister and I graduated from that school and both of her boys as well.

We all loved that place. This is very sad news.

As with domestic violence, the new psychobabble and police measures of recent decades to “stop” such incidents have apparently made them more commonplace. Maybe the social-social efforts of the bipartisan left against men and families are detrimental after all.

Glad that turned out with little damage done.

In my 60 years on this planet, I have learned to not confront a-holes except with overwhelming force, backup or both.

Whatever happened with you, you are fortunate to not have involved any cops (I gather).

If that is so - good decision.

Fortunately, our son made it quickly to the house, raced up the driveway and ran in to the bathroom to wash out his eyes. He was in a bit of shock over what happened; it truly scared him to think that what he had done could have resulted in someone pulling a gun on him vs. a can of mace-like spray, and the thought of that creating such devastation for his family (stay-at-home wife/mother of his two precious girls) was more than he could bear. He got quite choked up over it. He learned a big lesson that day...some things are just not worth pursuing...better left alone.

I’m in Jax, thats exactly right. Haven’t heard yet why he was fired...my guess is it had to be something pretty bad if this guy considered it serious enough to kill and then end his life. Senseless...over a stupid job.
