Obama touts southern half of Keystone pipeline

President Obama touted the construction of an oil pipeline from Oklahoma to the Gulf of Mexico today as a sign of oil production under his leadership, even though his State Department originally killed that pipeline when it refused to permit the construction of the Keystone pipeline.

"We just announced that we’ll do whatever we can to speed up construction of a pipeline in Oklahoma that’s going to relieve a bottleneck and get more oil to the Gulf -- to the refineries down there -- and that’s going to help create jobs, encourage more production," Obama said in North Carolina today. "So these are the facts on oil production. If somebody tells you we’re not producing enough oil, they just don’t know the facts."

The pipeline to which Obama alluded is only being constructed because TransCanada redefined the project to avoid the State Department's regulatory control over the Keystone XL pipeline.

Zer0 is a total POS!

Time for the House pubbies to tee up another bill to approve the entire pipeline, strongarm the Senate, and force Zer0 to veto it once again!

Heck with the pipeline. Build a couple refineries near the source and keep the gasoline and other products here in the states for use.

If you "build a couple refineries near the source" in, say, Montana, your next problem is that there is no way to efficiently distribute the products.

You'd then have to build new products pipelines to get the output to market.

Much more efficient to build the crude oil pipeline to the Gulf, refine the crude, then distribute the resultant product through the existing products pipeline networks.

I’ve heard from several sources, including Nebraskans, that Obama is trying to find a way to support the pipeline without losing support of the environmentalists and taking this issue away from the Republicans.

I wonder if it's downloaded into tankers at the Gulf for export. That would make it less likely to lower prices.

Some of it may be. But so, what? It adds supply to the market, which lowers prices world-wide. Including to us.

You should understand that some refinery products are being exported now -- for three reasons:

1. The bad economy has reduced consumption.

2. There is not currently enough pipeline capacity to ship any more refined product to the Northeast. The enviros have managed to block any increase in capacity.

3. Because of federal rules forbidding the shipment of products between US ports on anything but US flag shipping with fully unionized crews, it is actually cheaper to export the refining surplus on the Gulf Coast to Caribbean markets and import refined products into the Northeast from Nigeria.

Accordingly, if the federal government and the enviros weren't in the way, the US would not be exporting any fuels even today.

You should direct your animus toward the real villains in this artificial market.
