The White House is launching the web portal ethics.gov, a transparency website designed to fulfill a campaign promise of open and accountable government.
The portal puts various public records databases in a centralized location, including White House Visitor Records, lobbyist disclosure records, and campaign finance reports. Most of these databases were previously available online, but users can now search across all available datasets simultaneously.
"President Obama promised he would 'create a centralized Internet database of lobbying reports, ethics records, and campaign finance filings in a searchable, sortable, and downloadable format,'" the White House said in a statement. "Today, with the launch of www.ethics.gov , he's delivering on that promise. In a single, user-friendly format, anyone can access and search the records of seven different databases."
