U.S. military struggles to teach troops to respect Koran

Reporting from Washington— Troops serving in Afghanistan were advised never to touch the Koran, never to place anything on top of one, and to keep it off the floor and out of bathrooms. They were even told never to "talk badly" about it.

But the do's and don'ts said nothing about burning the Muslim holy book, which is what happened last month as a cache of Korans was incinerated at Bagram air base, setting off riots across the country that killed more than 30 people and provoked attacks on U.S. forces.

An investigation by NATO officials into the burnings found five U.S. troops responsible, but it concluded that the actions were not deliberate and were the result of a miscommunication. The troops could face disciplinary action, but commanders in Afghanistan have not yet announced the form it will take.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops last week started mandatory refresher training on how to handle the Koran. Troops are now told flatly not to dispose of Korans and will be urged to err on the side of caution when dealing with Arabic texts, assuming "material is sacred if there is any doubt over its religious significance."

It is no wonder the Chinese are coming to dominate us. We lost our national will to be street fighters.

It is no wonder the terrorists beat us. We’ve become soft and become too nice. Nice guy armies don’t work, they get slaughtered by others who are willing to do anything to win.

We’ve lost our will to win.

Sad.

Don’t disparage a book that encourages people to kill you and harm others. That’s the freedom you’re fighting for. Thanks for your service.

An absolutely astute picture.

It has been years since I stopped wondering what caused the fall of Rome. I am seeing it repeated in real time from a front row seat.

If I could curse the souls of all liberals to eternal doom for all time, then I would. I have no liberal friends. They are all evil, especially the ignorant well intentioned ones. They are the most evil because they cause the most damage.

I condemn them all. They are destroying my once free nation.

Koran...hmmm...one-ply or two-ply, I wonder? I hope it’s not like Charmin, because that clogs the pipes.

Dear muslims; we burn our flag when it’s beyond use. Grow up.

I “respect” the Holy Bible - or more accurately, I love it dearly. I have read substantial portions of the Koran and I can say with absolute certainty that it is worthy of no man’s respect. The peregrinations through which our government is going to avoid offending those who seek to dismember our society, our Nation, and our civilization are pathetic, misguided and suicidal. They amount to the the most egregious example of malfeasance in our Nation’s history.

The Koran is a recipe book for the commission of acts of violence, mayhem and tyranny. That our elected representatives and unelected bureaucrats are pandering to this pack of Seventh Century villains is absolutely disgusting. It is at our most imminent and severe peril that this course of action continues.

Islam Delenda Est!

Roger your last!!

Aren't we effect treating this as The Holy Book?

Do rules like this apply to the books or customs of any other religion? We are acting as if Islam is our state religion. /rhetorical

Koran- Use instead of paper towels to clean up the spatters that frying bacon leaves on the stove.

when soldiers mistreat prisoners in iraq, its bush’s fault
when soldiers mistreat koran in afghan, its the soldier’s fault, not obama’s

A thinking friend of the family who is career military is never going to be made to respect Islam, let alone the Koran, no matter how many classes are involved.

Bush really did us a huge disservice with his “peaceful, friendly Islam” nonsense in the wake of 9/11.

Anyone know where I can get a pile of cheap Korans free? I have this little, very old miners cabin on a water seep out in the mountains, has a two hole Islamic temple down from the cabin and I need something for the family to wipe their backsides with!

We are a proud military family, but I absolutely discourage all of our younger members now from joining the military. I wonder what the recruiting numbers are these days. I’m thinking it’s time to start having to weigh the consequences of disobeying illegal orders. I think we are at that point. The military takes an oath to uphold the constitution, not the president, not Eric Holder, not orders to kill and detain American citizens without due process. And this Bullsh!t about having to treat any scrap of Arabic writing with reverence just in case it is a Koranic verse is suicidal. It’s time for our cowardly senior military leadership to start standing up for what is right and stop just thinking of their careers. Yes-I called them cowards.

Our military leadership DOES need to respect the Koran...the same way that Thomas Jefferson did. Use it as a tool to see how to beat them. From the halls of Montezum to the SHORES OF TRIPOLI!!
