Well, duh, of course it is based on white prejudices. What else: White invented the thing. The simply solution is to marry into the culture. A black teacher I know called standard English the power language. The crazy efforts to keep black kids from learning it left them in a predicament. I once showed pygmalion —the one with Leslie Howard to a class—the white kids and about half the black kids got it. Some of them, however, were angered that Eliza had to try.
