Joseph Kony 2012: Obama administration congratulates success of campaign (another Red Herring)

The 30-minute video, Kony2012, was produced by three US videographers campaigning for greater efforts to capture Kony, the leader of the LRA. The video has been viewed on YouTube alone almost 50 million times in the last five days.

Jay Carney, the White House Press Secretary, congratulated the "hundreds of thousands of Americans who have mobilised to this unique crisis of conscience."

Mr Carney said: "I think this viral video that you mentioned is part of that response, raising awareness about the horific activities of the LRA, and consistent with the bipartisan legislation passed by our congress in 2010 the United States continues to pursue a comprehensive multi-faceted strategy to hel;p the governments and people of Central Africa in their efforts to end the threat posed by the LRA and reduce the human consequences of the LRA's atrocities."

Critics argue Kony and his diminishing troops, many of them kidnapped child soldiers, fled northern Uganda six years ago and are now spread across the jungles of neighbouring countries.

“What that video says is totally wrong, and it can cause us more problems than help us,” said Dr Beatrice Mpora, director of Kairos, a community health organisation in Gulu, a town that was once the centre of the rebels’ activities.

I am suspicious of anything like this that goes viral. So after a day and a half of seeing every second person put this on facebook I did one search and brought out the truth. Needless to say that all those I know got a lecture on checking their facts and doing some research before supporting anything and also on checking on other people’s/group’s agendas before they give them any money.

Hopefully we might get a few conservatives if they actually do it.

I too watched the video by Invisible Children, LLC Kony 2012 and it brought a tear to my eye. However, so many good-intentioned, feel-good, charities have burned me in the past.

LO AND BEHOLD, when you check out www.charitynavigator.com and other sites that monitor scams, you see that only 28% of funds go to Africa/Uganda, and three (3)!!! members take in the rest as it is distributed to "program costs". Anyways, I checked out some AFRICOM sites and Kony is a has been, and not even in Uganda anymore. Bring him to justice? Yes. Care for those in the warzone? Yes. Give to your church with Africa missions such as UMCOR? Yes. Give to Kony2012? HELL NO!

BTW...when Bill Clinton and Bush "cared" for the plight of Africa, 6mm people died due to our good intentions due to reprisals and tribal retributions centuries old.

I have long felt that we need to stop giving to African governments. Having money and propping up illegitimate despots creates tribal and power rivalries that only succeed in creating more wars and a reliance on that income stream.

I am happy to help through Caritas or CCF but no little tinpot socialist charity is going to get my hardearned.
