Obama apology tour ridiculed by House Republican on floor By Adele Hampton - 03/09/12 09:22 AM ET
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) used a floor speech Thursday to rattle off a list of apologies he said President Obama has issued since entering office.
Gohmert produced an oversized chart of not only Obama's apologies over the past three years, but also issues and events Gohmert thought more deserving of the president's time.
"I thought, maybe it would be helpful to track exactly what deserves apology and what doesn't," the conservative lawmaker, known for colorful floor rhetoric, said in his speech.
Marker in hand, the Texas representative then went down his list, marking off each event as either worthy of Obama's apology or not.
His first check mark went to what he called Obama's "apology tour" to countries around the world when he first took office. He said Obama apologized for CIA enhanced interrogation methods, for detainees at Guantanamo Bay and for the accidental burning of Qurans at a military base in Afghanistan last month.
He suggested that Obama has not apologized to the families of the soldiers killed in the wake of violence after those burnings. He also accused the president of neglecting to apologize to the family of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, whose death was linked to the failed "Fast and Furious" gun-tracking program.
Gohmert listed two apologies he thought Obama should have made to Israel, including for remarks French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Obama were overheard uttering before an open mic about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a G20 summit in 2011.
Gohmert also accused Obama of apologizing to Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown law student who testified to House Democrats in favor of Obamas contraception mandate in the healthcare law.
Conservatives argue the mandate violates religious freedom by forcing employers to provide contraception to employees against their moral beliefs, but Fluke became well-known after conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh called her a slut and a prostitute for wanting people to pay for her contraception.
Limbaugh has apologized for the remarks and taken heat from advertisers. Obama called Fluke last week to offer support and to say, according to Fluke, that her parents should be proud of her.
Gohmert labeled the call to Fluke another apology by Obama, and criticized the president for not apologizing to those offended by the contraception mandate.
"It struck me that the president recently found time to apologize to someone who'd been up here on the Hill testifying, but he never found time to apologize to those who he told you cannot practice your religious beliefs," Gohmert said.
"Comments made by Rush Limbaugh and his radio program about pro-abortion activist and Georgetown law student Sandra, and I'm told it's Fluck, Fluke whatever," Gohmert said. "Yes, found time for that apology."
Right on!!
Like Obama, Fluke is probably not even her real name.
I am glad our leaders on the Hill finally get vocal during election year. Expose Obama as he really is!
The First Congressional District of Texas is fortunate to be represented by this authentic Christian Conservative and a genuine American Patriot. He's only 58 and I'd like to see him in the White House in the future.
We need ANOTHER apology tour.
This time he should travel to all 57 states and apologize for what an incompetent leader he has bee.
Good find. The best apology will be when Obama apologizes to his supporters for losing in 2012.
Mr. Speaker. Beam Me Up!
“White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters ... Presidential apologies are rare,”
Whatever you say Jay, AP.
I’m one district over, but I’m willing to make a trade with you:
Rep Gohmert for Lord Dog Sh*t!
whats that thing on his head?
Yep. Especially when I heard her last name was pronounced “Fluck”. And she supposedly has a BS in sex studies? What is this, a porn flick? “Sex studies starring Sandra Fluck”?? It’s a joke, it’s all bullshiet and these libs are laughing their ass off.
Give that guy his man-card back!
Damn! I miss that guy. In realize he was a corrubt b*st*rd. But that describes about 50% of congress. And none of those offered near the comic relief.
It’s about time that republicans fought back in the same vein as the left. OK, it’s not classy or dignified but at this juncture in time, is necessary.
Republican interviewers, instead of wimping a question to democrat congresswomen about Bill Maher, should use the full “C” word when addressing them on the subject. Madam Congresswoman..”if Bill Maher called you a “C” (using the complete word), would you feel that he should apologize to both you as well as Sarah Palin?
Time to call a spade a spade. Only certain people can do this dirty work, but it needs to be done.
That evil individual is a stain upon Texas and the voters of the 25th Congressional District should be ashamed of their representative:
I completely concur...
I have yet to figure out what the redistricting has done as far as which district I belong in these days.
The boundaries are so gerrymandered it’s almost impossible to figure out.
I’m in Lakeway, a very conservative city that shares a boundary with Austin—a blue dot on a mostly red state.
At least he didn't bow to the Taliban and Al Qaeda.Or at least he didn't do it in front of a camera this time.
