Sun column thread
Kennedys’ profit near $1M at nonprofit
By Howie Carr | Sunday, March 11, 2012 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

The Kennedys are still the royal family of Massachusetts, not just in politics, but also in the wonderful world of “nonprofits.”

You’ve been hearing a lot lately about local nonprofits on wild spending sprees. But they’re pikers compared to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Kennedy II of Citizens Energy.

Let’s go straight to IRS Form 990 filed with the state attorney general for the year 2010.

Joe Kennedy, the former congressman and father of JoJoJo Kennedy, who next January will inherit Barney Frank’s seat in the U.S. House, is the CEO of Citizens Energy. He made $708,198 in 2010 at the so-called nonprofit.

Citizens Energy has a director of marketing. After the traditional nationwide search, the job went to ... Mrs. Joseph P. Kennedy II, also known as Beth. Beth’s take for 2010: $261,825.

Total annual grab for the storybook couple: $970,023.

Muchas gracias, Hugo Chavez!

Now, much of that Kennedy swag came from Citizens Energy’s profit-making arms, but still, it does have to file as a nonprofit.

As lax as the ethical standards for state elected and appointed officials are, they would be looking at serious fines if they hired their spouses. They have to get some other hack to hire their relatives, and then they reciprocate. One hand washes the other.

In the world of nonprofits, no such contortions are necessary. The boss hires the missus, and then thumbs his nose at the taxpayers.

Consider the aforementioned Life Focus Center of Charlestown. It’s run by the Millerick family — think of them as Kmart Kennedys. Jack Millerick makes $170,000 a year running an agency that’s supposed to help the disabled. It has a $2.9 million budget, $2 million of which comes from the commonwealth.

Life Focus Center has a “community services director” who makes $85,000 a year. Her name is Mrs. Jack Millerick. This goes way beyond feeding at the trough. This is licking the plate.

How convenient that Karyn Millerick is the community services director. Key word: community. If you’re in the “community,” you don’t have to come into the office very often.

Judging from their credit-card bills, the Millericks spend a lot of time in the community. Jack Millerick ran up bills at Disney World, New Hampshire state liquor stores and posh Cambridge eateries.

Life Focus is a family-oriented place. Also grabbing cash from the “nonprofit” was Jack Millerick’s brother-in-law ($6,600) and the deputy director’s brother-in-law ($11,000). The big winner was the staff director’s husband, paid $183,000 between 2008 and 2010 as a “stay-at-home grant writer.”

I’ll bet he stayed at home. Except when he was doing outreach, in the community.

Back to Citizens Energy. The Kennedys are very close to the Obamas, and why not? Back in 2005, Barack Obama became the junior U.S. senator from Illinois. That very same year, the University of Chicago Medical Center hired a new “vice president for community and external affairs.” There’s that word again — community.

The job paid $316,962 a year. It went to, you guessed it, Mrs. Barack Obama.

Another nationwide search!

It’s too bad more young people don’t read columnists like Howie.

Where’s the outrage?

He hasn't totally given Mitt a free pass but he seems to believe that we should vote for the most conservative yet electable candidate. Maybe Howie got turned off to Santorum when HC joked that he "has a personal dispensation from the Pope" and doesn't have to attend church. Rick could have smiled and made a nice joke back, yet pointed out how it's important to follow your religion. Instead, he seemed very serious about the matter, Howie says.

As Jerry Williams would say, Rick probably looked... annoyed...

And Since Mrs. Obama has gone to Washington, the position has remained unfilled. Odd the position was so important they paid 317k for the right person, but now they cannot find anyone with the right "qualifications". At least Hillary took a nice round 100k, how did they ever arrive at $316,962?

Wed column ping
A thrilling chapter in Bulger saga
By Howie Carr | Wednesday, March 14, 2012 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

My name is Whitey Bulger and I’m the author of this here book, “My Life in the Irish Mafia Wars.”

Whitey’s the name everybody knows me by, except for some suck-ups from the Globe who try to make it seem they’re my pals or something. Those front-runners call me “Jimmy.”

I live a quiet life now in Plymouth. The highlight of my week is Monday night at 9, when “Alcatraz” comes on Ch. 25. It’s about these inmates who were on the Rock when it closed in ’63. Now they’re coming back in 2012, not a day older. Every week, I hope that it’s the Choctaw Kid’s time to return.

Clarence Carnes, the love of my life. When the Kid comes back, I know the first thing on his mind will be busting me out of this hellhole. It’s like I always told him, don’t believe those stories. Sal Mineo meant nothing to me.

I can sum up my life in the Irish Mafia wars very succinctly. I’d pay off the cops, and then some wiseguy would cross me, and I’d call the cops and they’d lug the guy, or if I was really lucky, they’d shoot him. Saved a lot of wear and tear on my trigger finger, I’ll tell you that.

It was treacherous out there — you could ask Donald Killeen. Oh that’s right, you can’t ask Donald Killeen. Somebody talked some guys into killing him. That was the other part of my life in the Irish Mafia wars, talking other wiseguys into shooting mooks who got in my way.

When I look at the witness list against me, I realize now I should have spent a lot more time talking guys into shooting other guys for me. This one bum, the last time I seen him was on Anthony Bourdain’s TV show. Now he’s going to talk about, what, the hit car?

Even Stevie Flemmi’s flipped. Et tu, Stevie. After I strangled those broads for him, this is the thanks I get.

Bastards, you can’t trust any of them. They’re all rats. I should know, right?

Sometimes I even wonder, did Catherine Greig dime me out? Do you suppose she held it against me, her twin brothers-in-law getting two in the hat, I mean. They had it coming, I don’t know how many times I’ve explained that to her over the past 16 years.

Here in the can, I don’t have my boots no more. I used to tell everybody at the garage that I wore them because it was the only place I could hide a shiv. But the real reason I wore boots was because I had lifts in ’em. Without the lifts, I’m not much over 5 feet 5 inches tall. I would have been the other Corrupt Midget.

Gotta run, it’s time for “Alcatraz.” Tomorrow’s chapter: “What the B in FBI stands for — bribes.”

Yes...and someone on Howie’s show last night had the same thought I did: who’s gonna be Whitey’s co-author on the book, one Mike “Mickey” Barnicle?

Dear sir or madam will you read my book, it took me years to write, will you take a look?
My name’s Jimmy Bulger and I’d like to say
I kept the drugs out of Southie and I wanna be a paperback
writer, paperback writer-r-r-r

“I’m Jimmy Bulger and I kill people, motherf-——!”—Bulger
to Herald reporter (Paul Corsetti) in a bar

http://bostonhitman.com/Paul%20Corsetti.htm

>>That night, as Corsetti sat at the bar, a middleaged man sidled up onto the next stool and tried to engage the reporter in conversations. When Corsetti said he was waiting for someone, the man said, “You’re waiting for me, mother(bleeper). I’m Jimmy Bulger and I kill people.”
He then took out a piece of paper and read a few facts to Corsetti – his home address in Medford, the make and model and license plates of both his and his wife’s car, and, most ominously, the address of the day-care center where Corsetti dropped off his young daughter every day.

Now, anyone remember the scene in The Town where a gangster is about to rob the money room at Fenway and he starts
mentioning the guy’s address, what his wife does for a living, where his kids go to school...?

Howie’s other column written yesterday, which appeared on the Herald’s site and also at howiecarr.us

Feds let moll off easy, but skewered Chuck and Di
by Howie Carr

The feds are really throwing the book at Catherine Greig – a comic book.

The wrinkly Mob moll will be sentenced to 32 months today. Since she’s already been in custody for more than eight months, she could be out as soon as Valentine’s Day 2014.

Amazing. Think of how the G-men usually put the squeeze on hacks they set up – Chuck “Superfly” Turner comes immediately to mind. Yet in the case of Catherine Greig, aka Carol Gasko, a willing participant in multiple felonies, they give her a complete pass.

Who does she think she is, Felon Finneran?

She won’t have to testify against Whitey and she doesn’t have to tell who the octogenarian serial killer was talking to back here in Boston while he was on the lam. She doesn’t even have to spill where all of Whitey’s cash-stuffed safe-deposit boxes are. They’ve already found at least five of them, here and in Europe.

So how many of the boxes do you suppose they haven’t turned up, and how much money is — or was — in them?

Doesn’t it make you feel all warm inside, thinking of Whitey’s crooked kinsmen sneaking around the world, chuckling as they open all of Whitey’s safe-deposit boxes, grabbing millions upon millions of cocaine-tainted cash?

And the feds don’t seem to give a damn.

Naturally prosecutors want to avoid a trial whenever possible. You never know what a jury is going to do. But really, think of all the other charges they could have thrown at Catherine.

Remember all those guns they found in Mr. and Mrs. Gasko’s rent-controlled apartment in Santa Monica last year when they got lugged? I don’t believe any of the weapons were registered, were they? Not even the machine guns. Those state charges would be a slam-dunk in the California courts, and yet, the feds seem to have no interest in prosecuting her.

Maybe they feel sorry for Greig. It seems obvious that the former dental hygienist is a few fillings short of a perfect smile. She wasn’t even Whitey’s first choice to go on the lam with him. She only joined him after Teresa Stanley was dropped off at the Chinese restaurant in Weymouth.

Then there’s the whole family thing. Of course everyone has problems with their in-laws. But she took up with a serial killer whose victims included not one, but two of her brothers-in-law, the McGonagle twins. Excuse me, alleged victims.

Somewhere, Chuck “Superfly” Turner and Dianne Wilkersonare following this case and the r-word keeps running through their minds. And as corrupt as they are, this time Superfly and Lady Di may be on to something.

Ex-solon’s Fakery continues to bite
By Howie Carr | Friday, March 16, 2012 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists
Photo

Cheryl Jacques (rhymes with fakes) is back in the news, this time accused by the State Ethics Commission of throwing her not-inconsiderable weight around in an attempt to make her brother-in-law’s dental bill disappear.

Basically, the ex-solon is accused of asking the eternal question, “Do you know who I am?” although in Fakes’ case a more precise inquiry might be, “Do you know who I was?”

First she told the dentist’s receptionist, and then the dentist himself that she was — drum roll please — a “judge.” An administrative judge, in Industrial Accidents. A judge who makes $97,000 a year, compared to a real judge, who makes $130,000.

But this latest beef over a dental bill is small potatoes compared to all the other grifts Judge Fakes has been running for decades now.

Fakes is married to her former State House aide. That woman’s name is Jennifer Chrisler, and her pay rose 92 percent while she was working under Fakes. The solon claimed they didn’t start “dating” until after Jennifer left her employ.

Cheryl last won an election in 2002. Yet she still keeps open a campaign-finance account and can use the money for whatever she pleases. Jacques, who couldn’t be elected dogcatcher, doesn’t have to turn the money over to the state as long as she claims she’s keeping her electoral options open.

Jennifer Chrisler is now the executive director of something called the Family Equality Council. Naturally, it’s a nonprofit. In the group’s most recent filing, Chrisler reported an annual income of $158,243 a year.

Would you be shocked to learn that Cheryl is now draining her campaign finance account to contribute tens of thousands of dollars to her galpal’s non-profit?

Last year, Cheryl’s campaign committee donated $10,000 to the Family Equality Council. In 2010, Chrisler’s group got $5,000 from Jacques. In 2009, the payout was $6,000. In both 2008 and 2007, it was five grand. Isn’t that nice, and she still has $67,000 left to pad her galpal’s salary.

A call to the “judge” was not returned yesterday.

But of course it’s not just Cheryl’s spouse who’s getting taken care of. In October 2006 her campaign donated $10,000 to the Mass. Democratic Party. A month later Gov. Deval Patrick was elected governor. And soon thereafter, Deval appointed Cheryl to her $97,000-a-year hack job.

By the way, Cheryl isn’t the only member of her family on the state payroll. Her brother Steve makes $99,379 at the Mass Pike. Cheryl Jacques (rhymes with fakes). Forgotten, but not gone. How can we miss her when she won’t go away?

Special Sat. column ping (tried to post in wee hours but Herald website wasn’t co-operating)

Hey Tim, they’ll all be cracking up this time
By Howie Carr | Saturday, March 17, 2012 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists
Photo

This photo is from last year’s St. Patrick’s Day breakfast.

Talk about irony — tomorrow Lt. Gov. “Crash” Murray truly is going to be Home Alone at Halitosis Hall. Gov. Deval Patrick is conveniently on vacation, leaving Tiny Tim to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune all by his diminutive self.

And slings and arrows there will be — about Hurry Murray’s mystery wreck last November and his subsequent stonewalling on the cellphone records. Not to mention the woes of his consigliere, Mike McLaughlin, the hack’s hack who was making $360,000 at the Chelsea Housing Authority and is now in a photo finish with the grand jury.

The jokes write themselves, or would, if any of the hacks attending the breakfast had an IQ above room temperature. As Billy Bulger would say, “To a battle of wits they come unarmed.”

But I’m here to help with the wisecracks.

• You know a few weeks back the Bruins [team stats]’ Zdeno Chara set the NHL record for a slap shot — 108 m.p.h.? When he heard the news, Crash said, “Big deal, I can do that in my sleep.”

• Hey, listen you, if you don’t like the way Tim Murray drives, stay out of the woods.

• Would you believe Tim Murray got here this morning at 5:20? His daughter woke him up.

• It was foggy that night. There was an Irish Mist.

• Timmy’s the only guy from Worcester who could accomplish the impossible — we all miss Guy Glodis now.

• Hey Tim, I didn’t recognize you at first, without your pajamas and slippers on. (To which Tim replies, “I don’t know how I got here this morning. I just went out for a cup of coffee and a Herald.”)

• You can always spot Timmy’s car in the parking garage. It’s the one with the bumper sticker that says, “My other car is a rocket.”

Just as an aside, consider the succession of hosts over the past 40 years — from Sonny McDonough to Billy Bulger to Steve Lynch to Jack Hart. So much for the theory of evolution. But a lot of these current coatholders would be well-advised to make it to Halitosis Hall tomorrow — with Sal DiMasi singing to the grand jury, this may well be their last March 17 at liberty until 2019.

For some of these solons, it may be the last supper, er brunch.

Tim, you may be down in the polls right now. But don’t worry, if you lose, there’re plenty of jobs out there — crash-test dummy, or executive director of the Chelsea Housing Authority.

More Crash wisecracks:

• Tim Murray was planning to be here this morning, but as he was making a damage assessment in the Back Bay, his Crown Vic was struck by an exploding manhole cover.

• A little poem: “Roses are red, violets are blue. If you drove like Tim Murray, you’d be a Kennedy, too.”

• Tim Murray is here this morning. Do you know how I’m sure? The state police are denying it.
