ANNAPOLIS, Maryland- Joined by Bishops from nearby Baltimore and Washington DC, America's newest Cardinal Edwin O'Brien called abortion the "the civil rights struggle of our time" at the opening Mass of Maryland's annual March For Life.
O'Brien went on to criticize the Obama administration's new health care law requirements that would force the Catholic Church to provide contraception drugs including those that cause abortions. He also called Maryland's recent legalization of homosexual marriage an attack on the family and the institution of marriage itself.
The Cardinal thanked all those who were working on the pro-life and traditional marriage causes and encouraged them not to become disheartened. "I know these days we seem to be losing politically, but in the end God will have the last word on what is right". His comments received standing ovations from the crowd at Saint Mary's church in Annapolis where Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, a supporter of abortion rights and homosexual marriage, often attends.
In an interview with Fox45 after the Mass, Cardinal O'Brien stated: "Many of our people have had enough" "This is unprecedented that this has been done. There's an attack on life in the womb, there is an attack on marriage, and there is an attack on family life".
Over 2,500 pro-life activists then took to the streets of downtown Annapolis and marched to Lawyers Mall at the state capitol where speakers rallied the crowd to let the legislature know where they stand. After the rally, Chick-fil-A (recently under attack for supporting conservative causes) provided free food for the crowd at a reception. Petitions for a ballot initiative aimed at repealing same sex marriage had long lines throughout the night.
Guess you know where that repub stands on the issue...
As or the new Cardinal, I wonder, will he will step into the fray and actually do something to support the values he espouses? Will he command that Bishop Knestout reinstate and apologise to Fr. Guarnizo?

Fox News scrawl this morning said the Bishops were headed to D.C. for “discussions” on this topic.
I truly hope that means internal discussions and not some type of negotiation with the Obama Administration.
But I fear the latter. They seem to only be squawking about self-insured entities right now. They are telegraphing that they may accept the sophistry if all expenses are truly shoved onto third-party insurers.
They do not appear to have the stomach for this fight.
Abortion is self-inflicted genocide.
He can't. Fr. Guarnizo is in the Archdiocese of Washington.
BTW...when I was Grand Knight of my KofC council the councils in my area would host a 'Chaplain's Appreciation Dinner" and invite all the Cathoic military chaplains in the area as well as the then Archbishop O'Brien and I had the good fortune to meet him on several occaisons and share dinner. He's a great man. There's not a bit of equivocation in him! He's a good and holy priest.
I this man a Cardinal of the RC church? I thought the only new American Cardinal was Archbishop Timothy Dolan of NYC.
Both were elevated to Cardinal in February. O’Brien’s job prior to becoming Bishop of Baltimore was to basically tour and evaluate different archdioceses. After his completion he was appointed Bishop of Baltimore. (Kinda says something about what was going on there prior). Lots of “retirements” and “reassignments” followed. He is the real deal and, with Dolan, will give more of a voice to the conservatives in the Church.
As a ‘prince’ of the church, I do not believe that he is restricted by boundaries.
But, since I am not Catholic, I bow to your greater knowledge on the subject...my last statement was actually more of a question...

Must patronize them.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
He certainly is. Even the Bishop of Rome, the Pope himself, couldn't order Cardinal Wuerl to reincardinate Fr. Guarizno (sp?).
Good to know who the heroes are. Thanks for posting the info.
I think this is one of their twice a year meetings. The next one will be in November. They do need prayer.
