Sounds like two volumes of confessions to me.

Whitey Bulger, author? But can he go on a book signing tour? HC list ping

I haven’t read Billy Bulger’s “While the Music Lasts” but I can guess how he treats memories of “Jimmy”...

"My Life As A Gay Slut" might've made for marginally more compelling reading

Of course there have been books like Hitman—Howie telling John Martorano’s story, Street Soldier, and a couple books by Kevin Weeks. The second one I think was released just shortly before Whitey’s capture.

>>Where’s Whitey? by Kevin Weeks and Phyllis Karas

amazon.com lists a publication date of June 7 of last year.
Whitey was captured on June 22, I think. (So I’m in a hotel
room near Pittsburgh, turn on the netbook, and Howie’s facebook greets me with “So now that Whitey Bulger has been captured”... huh?

Ah, but amazon says Week’s second book (the first was Brutal) got re-issued in Nov.
>>Writer Kevin Weeks was top Lieutenant to James “Whitey” Bulger, head of the South Boston Irish Mob, who was on the run for more than 16 years before his capture on June 22, 2011... While WHERE’S WHITEY is fiction, its insider knowledge makes it all the more intriguing, with hints toward where Whitey and his companion Catherine Greig may actually have spent those 16 years on the run.

Billy Bulger, Whitey bulger’s brother was the head of the Massachusetts Democrat Party for many years. You can find pictures of him with Ted Kennedy, John Kerry and all the other Massachusetts Democrats.

Whitey Bulger was politically connected. He could do whatever he wanted and police were ordered not to arrest him. Whitey was small time compared to what the Democrat Party officials stole from the “Big Dig” project and other taxpayer funded projects.

Yes and movies like The Departed show the political connections helping gangsters.

“I’m Jimmy Bulger and I kill people, motherf——!”—J. Bulger
to a Herald reporter—not Howie—IIRC.

Supposedly it was a one back scratches the other deal—
especially with convicted FBI agent John Connolly. Whitey
provides info to Connolly, rats out gangsters, and Connolly informs Whitey that the FBI is due to arrest him, etc. And with Billy Bulger’s political connections, that was a help too. A police officer might get transferred or demoted if he goes after Whitey. Funny.

But note: in 1988 Billy Bulger worked with the team to elect George H.W. Bush,
Mike Dukakis’ opponent...setting up the “tour of (supposedly clean) Boston Harbor”

>>The people who were duped and demeaned by William Bulger make an amazing list, as Howie and I totted it up informally. High in the ranks is Michael Dukakis, who as governor signed Bulger’s vendettas into the state budget. Bulger showed his capacity for gratitude and solidarity by encouraging George H. W. Bush in one of the decisive campaign ploys of the 1988 presidential campaign: the floating diatribe, from a boat in polluted Boston Harbor, against Dukakis’s environmental record.

From the same page:
>>Think of Whitey Bulger as our neighborhood Osama Bin Laden. Both Whitey and Osama were embraced and empowered by the security apparatus of the US government: Whitey by the FBI, ostensibly to get information on the Italian Mafia; Osama by the CIA and Pentagon, to lead the fighting forces of Islam against the Soviet domination of Afghanistan. Both Whitey and Osama grew out of control into much more dangerous monsters, you could argue, than the enemies they’d been enlisted to fight. And then — oops! — both of them disappeared!

Has anyone done an investigation of how much Billy Bulger and other Massachusetts Democrats stole from Big Dig and other government projects? The estimates I heard from people familiar with it say at least $100 million and probably much more.

Whitey was the small time crook in the family.
