PARADISE The Colorado man shot by a California Highway Patrol officer Sunday night at a Paradise gas station, succumbed to his wounds.
Paradise Police Chief Chris Buzzard reported Monday that Christian Valdez, 18, died shortly after police arrived on the scene.
He was shot at the Flyers gas station at Pearson and Clark roads after he led CHP officers on a chase that started about 25 miles south on Highway 70 near Ophir Road in Oroville.
Buzzard would not comment whether Valdez was armed or where he was when he was shot. "He was in that proximity," Buzzard said. He said the Paradise Police Department, which is the lead agency in the case, hopes to have answers in the next few days.
CHP spokesman Justin Maxey said Monday afternoon that Valdez and his passenger Jose Herrera, 19, were escapees from a youth detention facility in Colorado. Herrera, who was taken into custody on outstanding warrants from Colorado, and Valdez were from the Denver area, Maxey said.
Maxey said an officer tried to pull over the vehicle on Highway 70 near Ophir Road in Oroville.
"There was a slight delay between the time the light bar went on and the speeds started," he said. "There was no intent to pull over."
Buzzard said the chase at times reached speeds of 120 mph.
