LONGVIEW — The Longview Police Department is hosting a women’s handgun safety class to teach the laws, safety, and proper handling of a handgun. This is not the prerequisite course to obtain a concealed handgun license.

The class consists of two sessions, with the first one beginning on April 19, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Maude Cobb Activity Complex located at 100 Grand Avenue. The second session will be held on April 21, 2012 at the Longview Police Department’s firing range.

The class is open to all females who are at least 18 years of age or older. Applicants must also be able to pass a criminal background check.

Preregistration is required. A handgun is not required for this class. A handgun is not needed for the Thursday night session and cannot be brought to class.

The class size is limited to the first 60 women who register.

Nice to see the local police department support the community.

I think that they will fill the class quickly.

My question is, why the police? Are there no NRA or NSSF women’s programs available in the vicinity? Not knockin’ on the police, but in my experience, women instructing (I’m a certified instructor BTW) other women is a much more comfortable and empowering experience for beginners.

Just askin’.

There is plenty of demand, and if the course if free, it is hard for the private sector to compete. It is good public relations for the police department.

I sure hope they don't use the Cooper Rules.
As they are unsafe for the average person.

I hope thy use the NRA safety rules:

If people were to follow these NRA safety rules they would eliminate "accidents":

Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction

Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot

Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use

There is an NRA-affiliated range, the East Texas Rifle and Pistol Club, about 10 minutes away. ETRPC has a very active and rapidly growing group of women shooters that meets weekly. The range has several licensed instructors, two of whom are women.

That’s great! As I said, I’m not knocking the police at all and I think it’s great they are making the opportunity available. The demand must be high enough that the private enterprises can’t meet it. In my book, that’s a good thing!
