I've been smiling since I heard this news last night.

May God be with Rick Santorum!

You're kidding, right? I like many things about Gingrich but diplomacy isn't what he's known for.

I'd like to see Gingrich in a prominent post in a Santorum administration — being VP and president of the Senate seems like a good choice, though several cabinet secretary posts would be nice too — but as an AMBASSADOR???????

We'd be at war with the verbal bombs Gingrich would throw since he'd make our enemies so mad.

On second thought... maybe we could send Gingrich as an ambassador to countries we wanted to provoke into attacking us first, and then bomb them into irrelevance.

Also, the press secretary position is one in which the press secretary has to carefully represent the President's views, not his own. Gingrich is not a team player, based on his own recent statements criticizing Santorum for being a team player. Whatever position Gingrich holds, he needs the freedom to express his own views or his major advantages are neutralized.

As I see it, that means the vice presidency with a “portfolio” of managing the Senate and deliberately trying to blow up its atmosphere of good-old-boy collegiality, just as he successfully did in his role as Speaker of the House.

I think VP Newt Gingrich has real potential. Put Gingrich to work doing what he does best — breaking up good-old-boy networks — and have him do so in the legislative arena where he has the most experience.

That could become especially important because of the collegial nature of the Senate and Santorum’s former role as a senator. Yes, I know that Santorum was part of the Gang of Seven going after government corruption in the congressional banking scandal, but it may be much more difficult for a President Rick Santorum to fight former Senate colleagues than it would be to hand that pit-bull duty over to Gingrich.

I'm well aware that the vice president in modern history has not normally presided over the Senate and his duties have largely been administrative “as assigned” tasks in the executive branch. Gingrich is not traditional in his leadership style, and especially if we don't get control of the Senate this year, I believe Gingrich could perform a valuable service by regular public fights with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, preventing Reid's agenda from gaining traction.

Good-cop bad-cop strategies can work and may play to the strengths of both Gingrich and Santorum.

That's exactly why I like the idea of Gingrich as VP despite not personally liking him much.

Like has nothing to do with it, but Santorum is probably, and I’m not kidding, 40 points IQ short of Newt minimum. Newt’s probably 150ish and Santorum just average or a shade higher, maybe. Santorum will also turn off general election voters in droves.

Folks will forgive being “an arrogant asshole” like Newt is when the chips are down. Folks NEVER forgive piousness and holier than thou. Santorum comes off like that. Is that fair? I don’t know? What’s fair got to do with it?

Can you educate us here? This is not the post I would have thought best suited for Gingrich. You have access to more information than most of us and I’d appreciate knowing why you believe Gingrich would be best as Secretary of Energy.

I completely agree. Santorum’s personality IS a huge turn-off, and I can see it being a big factor in the general election.

But, looking at the delegate count, it’s almost besides the point now.

Newton Gingrich is the debate winner, and thus far that has been worth only two states. Of Alf Landon it was said “as ME goes so goes VT”; of Newt, “as SC goes so goes GA.” But he won nearly ever debate except for one in FL.

Why is this? People say he connects well one-on-one. Some even say he is "immature," but he is a year or two older than GA Jimmy was in 1976. I think he looks younger than his age.

I get Energy Secretary entirely. However, you've got to allow for Press Secretary too, no?

Those sessions would be priceless!

The guy CONNECTS on the stump out there amazingly well among all the remaining candidates. Genuine, giving of his time, smiling, not complaining, not telling staff members to sit in the car but not address him, referred to as “Rick” by staff. You probably could not find a more average, down to earth, nice guy to sit with over the barbeque in the summer and talk politics over a few beers, broiling up the burgers. I think you might have the wrong “Rick Santorum”. Maybe a different one out of the phonebook from Yonkers, New York?

If Santorum should become the nominee, he has to pick someone who can bring in votes from areas that he isn’t strong in..and Newt is popular in the same areas as Rick, ie the South.

The GOP nominee will most likely pick someone for VP who is hispanic or can bring in hispanic votes.

The only way that Newt even deserves a position in the admin. is if he helps Santorum win...and so far his ego is front and center and he is declining to do that.

If he doesn’t come around and soon, he’ll be giving speeches and teaching at Universities and that will be it.

Santorum is running a great campaign.

Right, easyrighter. The Santorum haters on this site can’t even acknowledge that. They are a disgrace to their candidate who doesn’t have a bat’s chance in h*ll.

Watching The Stutterer on CNN should give even the most die- hard GOP Elitist pause.

Mittens was pathetic as he dissed Santorum with a smile, all the while while claiming that Rick’s campaign is desperate and his campaign is all but over.
Romney has to NERVE to accuse his opponent of lying in ads?

Mittens; the poster boy for attack smears that veer from truth.

Two can play the game, Massachusetts Moderate/Liberal.

I won’t vote for him either, Batt. No nose holding this time.

I don’t quite know what to make of your comment about Santorum “trying to be king”—— I’ve been a supporter of Santorum for the past 20 years. The man HAS NO ego. He willingly sacrificed his Senate seat in order to get some conservative judges on the SC. He’s been crucified for it ever since. People are so shallow, and you don’t know what the F you are talking about. I think Santorum and Gingrich will eventually come to an agreement, and one of them will throw all there support behind the other, because they know that this country cannot sustain another four years like the last. Because I believe that both of them are exceptional Americans, and I’d be proud to support either. Are you a Rombot?

Had you not implied I’m a Rombot I would have much to counter your post with...but that ended this conversation...for obvious you haven’t a clue about me and your intentions IMO are to build up Santorum using his excuses, which you used, rather than the established fact. I will not give you that platform.

Further I’ve had to live with Santorum in my state and he was raised not far from me so you jumped the gun big time as to what I know about the man..... End of story.

Open or closed primary? How many Republicans voted, how many Democrats voted, that’s what I want to know.
