CONWAY - Lee Bellamy now stands shoulder-to-shoulder with police officers in the fight to get guns off the streets of Horry County, a long, long way from where he was just a few short years ago.

"They are good and upright citizens, who live a good life" Bellamy said of the officers. "Basically, that's what I'm doing also."

Bellamy served more than 20 years in prison--including several years on death row--after a murder conviction. Four years ago, he got out on parole after a supreme court decision overturned his conviction and death sentence. Now, he works with young people in Horry County.

"The reality is: you're not alone," said Bellamy.

The Horry County Police Department, the Horry County Sheriff's Office, and Conway Police Department will all take part in a gun buyback program in Conway on March 24. The locations are The Father's Place on U.S. Highway 378 and the National Guard Armory on 16th Avenue. From 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m, officers will hand out $50 Bi-Lo gift cards in exchange for a rifle, shotgun, or other long gun, $100 gift cards for handguns, and $200 gift cards in exchange for an assault rifle. The departments are also trying to get gift cards redeemable at gas stations.

Dr. Naquan Muhammad is also an ex-con and helped bring the P.E.A.C.E. Institute (Positive Education Always Corrects Errors) to Atlanta and parts of Conway, and he says the collaborative effort shown by city and county leaders can go a long way to proving successful to stopping crime.

"Unlike in other cities, I've seen cohesion here," said Dr. Muhammad. "That kind of collaboration and communication is how we're going to solve the problems of drugs and crime and violence in our community."

"I want the public to see that government officials and law enforcement care about the community," said Interim Chief Saundra Rhodes with Horry County Police Department. "I think when they see us working together, they know its something important to us."

"Seeing the importance of how one person can make a difference, getting one gun off the streets--if you follow that type of philosophy, you're not just waiting on someone else to take a positive approach," said Conway Police Chief Reggie Gosnell.

The Conway Police Department is accepting donations to help pay for the gun buyback program. If you are interested, you can make a donation to the fund at Horry County Savings Bank.

Private sales are legal in South Carolina, as they are in most of the country. This sounds like an opportunity to buy some decent guns at a price that is benifical to both the buyer and seller.

If I were close, I would be there asking people that are bringing guns to the area to see them and to make an offer if I were interested. Other freedom fighters have done this and have been successful.

The best, of course, is to get news coverage of you doing this.

One problem I’ve seen with these gun buybacks is that they’re typically “no questions asked”. It seems like it would be a great opportunity for a thug to dump a piece used in a crime, plus get cash for it.

So the city of Conway sold guns to people?
No. So this is not a gun buyback. It is another useless publicity stunt.

and $200 gift cards in exchange for an assault rifle.

An Assault rifle is one that is capable selective fire including full auto. I DOUBT SERIOUSLY this is what they mean by assault rifle.

No. So this is not a gun buyback.

This illustrates the attitude of the statists who organize these things. To a statist ALL of your property in reality belongs to the state. So if the state offers you money for something of yours (rather than simply seizing it which is the preferred method of dealing with peasants' property) then they are "buying back" something that you only own because the state allows you to keep it.

This is the same logic where tax cuts "have to be paid for."

It’s one of those terrible “black guns”. They fire all by themselves without anyone touching them!! To have this happen in SC is ridiculous! I guess enough Yankees have moved there to start this. The year GB got elected I joined a patriot and hero WWII vet in Knoxville Tn after reading his post on “the firing line” to protest their “gun buy-back” His name was Ed Williamson and he took exception to the fact that they were buying the guns in an area of town that had the highest crime rate and an area the cops wouldn’t go into after dark. He braved the cops by himself the first time and they violated that old man’s rights like crazy. The second time they did it my wife and I decided to be the “over the hill” people and drove to Tn to help him. About 30 patriots showed up and they restricted us to one part of the property and taped off the adjoining street. It was the most bizarre tactical thing I have ever seen. Most of the people we were able to talk to were “giving back” crap guns that wouldn’t work. Because the NRA sent Charlton Heston in to defeat Gore a few months later Ed’s group got picked to meet and escort him to the event. He has all these wonderful pictures of him and Moses! The NRA gave a block of tickets to his group to go to GB’s inauguration but they were supposed to be Tn residents. Ed said I have two friends from NC that need to be there and the NRA said ok. Needless to say my wife and I joined over 1 million of our best friends in the mist to see George take the oath of office. It was one of the most humbling experiences of my life. Get involved people and spend a little bit of time exercising your first amendment right to protect your second. That is the only one that protects all of you’re rights! They are so afraid of an armed and informed people. Guess me and the Mrs have something else to do that day, why not join us????

The only gun owners that will sell-back are the DWLs! The smart citizens and the gang bangers will stay armed.

Serves no usefull purpose at all, and merely avails some of the opportunity to upgrade.
