Today the police lie all the time. I doubt very much that they identified themselves clearly as police - except, perhaps, after they shot him.
If the target was a few doors down the dog-shooting doughnut-eaters could have knocked on the victim’s door to let him know what was happening.

Because it would NEVER occur to home invaders to identify themselves as cops, and since cops work for the homeowners, it should be the homeowners and not the cops who bear the consequences of guessing wrong.
