At least nine candidates will be in the race for retiring Sen. Olympia Snowe's (R-Maine) Senate seat, according to a count by The Hill, including six Republicans, two Democrats and an independent.
The six Republicans had all filed the requisite 2,000 signatures by midday Thursday, the last day for candidates to officially enter the race. Those Republicans included state Attorney General William Schneider, Maine Secretary of State Charlie Summers and state Treasurer Bruce Poliquin.
One Democrat, former Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, has also filed, according to Maine officials.
State Sen. Cynthia Dill, another Democrat, told The Hill on Wednesday she had racked up more than 2,000 certified signatures and would file them by the end of the day on Thursday.
But all eyes are on Angus King, the independent former governor who left both Democrats and Republicans unsure of how to proceed when he announced last week he would make a bid for the seat. Early polling showed King leading a three-way race for the seat.

I think that we can win this one, but the Republican nominee will have to be a good candidate who can connect with the voters and he’ll have to run a very skilled campaign.
I was really confused with this story seeing so many Republicans wanting to run for Snowes seat. Then I got to the first line of the article where there was an “R” after her name. Sure enough, I looked it up and she WAS a Republican. I never new that from hearing about her votes. I just figured she was a Rat. You learn something new on FR everyday.
I know Attorney General William Schneider.
He is just an awesome guy!

Post of the day for sure. I know that I do.
I got so excited when I read about Snowe retiring...until I realized the possiblities of a younger left winger replacement.
I hope sincerely we do not get that! But the people of Maine have not proved to vote too conservatively.
I’m glad I don’t live in Maine. This is the ultimate test of the Buckley rule.
Indy-weary,
6 Pubs?
Sneider, Summers, Poliquin,
D’Amboise, the lady state Senator, and #6.
I am not optimistic ... there will be 2 frontrunners, and the more conservative one will lose cuz the other conservatives will not know to drop out.
Can we please get a REAL Republican Senator from Maine?
Suzie Collins not real enuf for ya?
Bruce Poliquin is the gov. money man. He has already had a great victory in out the head of the turnpike authority. (The guy just got 5 years in prison) When the Gov has any town hall type meeting, Bruce is there.
He has been on the ground for 2 years. He is always available for tea party groups and church ladies. He is very good at explaining money issues to not politically involved people.
Has a genuine smile, one of the best at remembering people, and just a very nice person. He appears to really care about the future of the state.
It’s going to be a fun season. Mainers,check my tag;

I suspect that our biggest obstacle is Summers, who I assume is pro-abort and seems to be a serious contender.
Bennett. Worth looking into.
I don’t see D’Amboise as a serious candidate for the general.
Why do I assume that Poliquin is a pro=abort?
I suspect that our biggest obstacle is Summers
Charlie is the guy who sent out threatening letters (Under his state letterhead) to students from other states who voted in the ‘10 election.
His wife, Ruth, is second in comand. She was the driving force behind (and unseen) in the staw poll fiasco.
